Wireless internet issue
« on: July 05, 2011, 05:10:07 PM »
Need some helpful advice about something - I got a Sweex LW055, and I recently swapped which computer was connected directly and wirelessly. In past computer in next room (Windows XP, older comp) was connected directly to internet and my current computer I'm on now was connected wirelessly, picking up the signal from a dongle connected through the USB port.

Due to circumstances needed for work I've now swapped this over, so my own computer is the one connected directly, and I want to make the old computer in next room use the dongle. But for some reason the dongle's not really being recognised, it seems it realises something's gone into USB port but it isn't actually acknowledging it's to pick up the signal or whatever, and I'm not sure how this can be fixed.

Any advice would be helpful.

odd. You may have tried this. but unplug everything, the router, the PC, the modem etc. Then start the modem, wait. Start the router, wait for it to start up, then plug in the USB and see if the PC picks up the signal then, If not than it may be worth a Tech support call, I loath tech support lines but they have occasionaly helped me with the rare odd situation such as this.

USB was the last thing I did. Plus xbox is connected wirelessly as well automatically and once Sweex was up and running from my comp it was working fine on xbox. Perhaps it's a dodgy dongle.

Perhaps, they do tend to damage easily.

But if Dongle was damaged, it wouldn't be getting recognised by the computer...that piece of crap old computer realises what is being plugged in the USB port, but it doesn't actually do anything else in regards to making it work! So bloody infuriating.

Hmm. re install USB drivers? or try another USB. I've had that happen, once its in a new port it picks it up.

To reinstall the actual USB driver itself on an old Windows XP computer...I assume it could do it automatically?

If its possible you need to try to go on the manufacturers website and download the drivers for your dongle/ adaptor, which you then can install on the pc.
Sounds like you said its being recognised but the drivers are not being automatically installed.

One of the first things I did was go to the website (Sweex) to attempt to get the drivers to download but they're not available anymore. Perhaps it's because it's an older model of router, but friggin' pissed it's not available.

Here is the driver I'm looking for:

marvell wireless device v1.0.1.2

If I find driver for that, I'll get it working. I tried hard online to get it but no real luck, a lot of dead-ends. Anyone good at googling? :P

First link, the marvell site, looks a dead-end.

Second link, some of it's in French gibberish, hard to find what I'm looking for in there.

Third link requires me to be connected to internet...ironic isn't it? (EDIT: I should clarify, third links is leading you to software to download once you fill in a survey, this software is something that apparently looks at your devices you have and tells you what drivers you need, and then it looks to download them from online. So in effect it's basically an electronic version of what me and you have been doing - googling our asses off, finding the same pages as one another about this cursed thing!)

I took the dongle from old computer, put it back in this, and naturally it worked perfectly. I then checked what driver was making it work, and I copy and pasted it to a DVD and attempted to copy the same driver file (all driver files are in c/windows/system32/drivers) onto the old computer. But old computer seemed to already have it...I can't do this short-cut, it needs to be the actual installation process rather than skipping ahead to the final step!

So all three links are dead in the water for me :(

EDIT: Guess it woulda helped if I'd just LOOKED at the god-damn USB stick and read what was on it. It says: LW058. I go to Sweex website, look that up and I find a driver download. LW055 is the ROUTER I'm using, but that probably has nothing to do with the actual dongle make...

Currently downloading the driver now, if this won't work NOTHING WILL!

Meh, might work.
Could always just buy a new one with an installation CD, They arent expensive but it is kind of a waste since you already have one.

Thanks for everyone trying to help me out, much appreciated.
