Torrents?
« on: May 05, 2008, 04:56:49 AM »
I had a little idea one day..about torrents and stuntvids.
I was wondering if we possibly could make some kind of torrent site with stuntvids or programs only, because for example; Fracture HQ was on 400 mb and took the whole day to download. And the GTA: United mod wasn't that small either. The files you download can't be paused so you have to download the whole vid/file at one time..or in a line or what it's called in english . With torrents you can download a bit of the vid whenever you want without parents that keeps shouting that  the internet connection is slow and they won't get in on internet..

But the second question is; How does it really work with torrents?
I am not a real computer king but I think the torernt is a extremely packed file that unpacks while downloading or something something..I'm so wrong..?
I opened up utorrent and choosed "create torrent" and selected a vid that didn't take too long to create with.
What would happend if I upload it on a site and another person download it? Can we have a sort of connection to each other and share download speed?
Does it work that way or am I just completely facing the wrong direction?

But what do you think, is it a good idea or not? And can it possibly work?

With a good browser (Firefox, Opera) you can pause your downloads, not sure about IE. Downloading 400 MB's doesn't take that much, with basic 1/512 connection (100 kB/s) it takes less than few hours. There's really no need to this, though if someone want's to use his time and money to this, sure. You'll get support from me at least.

Don't think it would work because we are only a small community. Big torrents like video games or movies are being downloaded by tons of people. But wouldn't be worth it with such a small community since there wouldnt be many seeders.

Yes, but I thought of it as an alternative to the other.
It was just a thought. Some people as me have slow connection so I just love torrents but then again, thare wouldn't be that many seeders

It'd be nice, as I said, I have nothing against it. Though most people don't know how to use 'em (like it'd be hard) and I think people more likely use their browser to download videos.

Maybe later, when this community grows and someone can come up with it.

That thing nearly made me piss my pants. I thought I was getting 5mb/s but it was the download progress.

or use downthemall add-on to firefox so you can pause your downloads
and torrents sucks too, they need seeders and sources and such

Torrents are great, definitely the best way of downloading large files imo. Though, as already written in this topic, as long as the stunt vids aren't much bigger (than they are today) many probably wouldn't use torrents.

Well thank you guys for discussing this, now I know a bit more.
Yes, stuntvids are not that big so torrents might be unnecessary but the thing about firefox was great, thanks!

Seems like you're talking about something that you down know a fuck about. Everything needs source; when you download using your browser, all the data comes from the server to your HDD. Torrent's are just better, theres no risk of server downtimes (except if there's downtime at tracker you're downloading from), though usually when when that happens, you still keep downloading, since other user's uploading to you ain't dependive of tracker.

All you need is a good tracker (no, not any public if you'll ask that) and a client, so that "such" is kinda pointless.
