Personally, I don't think that it's a DX problem.. If you think that thats the problem, why don't you just re-install DX? Have you asked on the Steam Forums? Maybe the admins can help..

His hardware might run DirectX 7.0 mode on the source engine with less error.

Olin- I've tried -dxlevel 70 and -dxlevel 80 and -dxlevel 90, none worked.

Ph33r- I've reinstalled 7 times, to date :/

-dxlevel 85 or 81, 80 fucks up on my PC, may be the same for yours.

The DirectX levels are 60, 70, 80, 81, 90 and 95.

piker, you get pixelshader 3.0 by upgrading ur gfx card, its hardware that defines ur pixelshader version, not updating software.

pixelshader 4 is on 8800 cards right? i read that somewhere

Depends on yer mobo/psu. If youve got PCI-E graphics slot, 500w or above with your PSU, you can go for a 8600, 8800, something like that. If youve got say 400w, PCI-E, get a 7600gt or similar. If your still on AGP, 7600 would be good too.

It's probably rounding it to 81. 85 isn't a valid value.
