Overheated video card
« on: October 03, 2006, 01:04:58 PM »
I think I overheated my video card (GeForce 7300 LE) by trying to make a SA 100x drawdistance mod.

Before I tested the mod my SA constantly ran at 30fps at 1024x768, even when frapsing.
Now SA runs at a laggy 20fps. It even drops to 15fps when going fast, which makes the game unstuntable.
VC still runs at 30fps, but when frapsing it now drops to 20fps.

Any ideas what happened and how to fix it? I didn't mess with the drivers or installed new crap btw.

You think thats bad? When doing Radiance 2 I had to record every stunt with 5 FPS or lower in VC. I made a 15 FPS stunt too, in LC

I record with 1024x768x32 at 30fps. I can also put the Nvidia anti-aliasing settings to 16x and antisophoric settings to 8x and record at 30fps

i dono about overheating, the 7300 is a somewhat "weak" card that shouldnt produce all too much heat

it may be because with that extreem draw distance it is overloading the card and it simply can not handel  the stress, but if you realy do think it is overheating check the temps on it, if it is above 86Celcius it is getting too hot for that card and i would reccomend the Zalman vf900 cooler, it works wonders and is one of the best coolers out

to check out the temp
http://3dgpu.com/files/coolbits2.reg
coppy all that and paste it into nptepad and save to desktop, rename it from ".txt" to ".reg" doubble click on it and press yes and now right click on desktop goto nvidia display and you will see ways to overclock your card and a temperature display

FIND OUT WHAT THE TEMP IS UNDER LOAD
basicly find out what it is when your playing SA realy laggly like

I record in 1152x864 (have FRAPS to record @ 15fps - If I didn't I'd record at a laggy 23fps) and then in Vegas I simply increase the speed from 1.000 to 2.000, incase you're bad at maths   That means the end result is a smooth 30fps, sexy looking video.

( I got a new monitor so I can record in fat resolutions now  )

As for you busting your comp:  Sad man... what where you thinking  100x would be ridiculous... you'd be able to see lamposts from another island

The maximum resolution for Half-size capture is 2560x1600. Full-size video capture is limited to a maximum of 1152x864 (4:3) or 1280x800 (widescreen).

You didn't realise that recording in full size at a res higher than the full size limit automatically records it half size

So basically recording in 1600x1200 in half size and getting 30fps isn't exactly 'holy crap awesome'  But still I bet it takes a decent coputer to still get 30fps.

Yesterday it was 70° when it lagged at 1024*768.
Today I removed the case (instead of buying a cooler ), played the game at 640*480 and got a constant 25fps, at 50°.
At 1024x768 it went to 60° and fps dropped to 15.

I dont think the heat matters now. I think if it overheated it somehow damaged the performance of the card, which makes it crap now.

My computer was overheating to REALLY bad temps, I can't remember what they where reaching but it got so serious when I put my hand on the comp it literally burned me  sort of  and when I would play a game I'd be playing and then suddenly my computer would restart, even when it wasn't roasting hot it would overheat and just shutdown... I cleaned my comp, it was dusty as hell

Hmm... have you reinstalled SA? that's all I can think of   make sure you don't have some dumb anti virus running like Norton   Norton is dumb it uses more process than games... almost
