Title: VC-specific recording problem
Post by: A maid on September 24, 2014, 07:42:48 AM
Dunno if I've posted this problem before, but it's annoying the living hell out of me.

Thing is a few months ago I was unable to record in LC and SAiVC at 30 fps because it would start to lag way too much, and drop down to about 15 to 20 fps depending on my Catalyst Control Center settings.
Now a few weeks ago I noticed the same starting to happen in VC, and I'm all out of ideas.

What I've tried is defragging the boot drive and the drive I record to, running a disk cleanup and removing everything it suggested, as well as try and close every program I don't need while recording but all to no avail.

I can't remember anything else I've tried because I've been stuck with this or so long, and I absolutely refuse to record at anything below 30 (by the way, only 15 and below seems to work) because recording things in San Andreas seems to go perfectly fine, so there should be a real solution to this.
Also with changes to my HDDs not making any differences I'm starting to wonder if it's my GPU (HD 6950 2GB), but I wouldn't know how to fix anything with that if I wanna avoid OCing anything.
Help me out guys, recording is a huge pain in the ass like this and the speed-tapping looks fucking horrific if I do it this way.

So VC is just running fine and as soon as you start a recording, the FPS drop down and sort of "lock" themselves? If yes, then I possibly had the same problem a few years back.

What I did was getting another version of Fraps and disabled all types of AA (globally + for gta_vc.exe especially) in the GPU driver. That did the trick for me, so either was possibly causing it. The image quality was not relevant to me since I never edited a VC video.

Additional tip in case the disabled AA thing works:
VC looks even worse without AA, but you could maybe improve the edges with downsampling and AAE + JaggyBuster to an appropriate level for editing again.

I'll try and ask him, thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I quickly tried disabling AA but it only seemed to get the fps to an unstable 21-24 fps while recording.

You could set Fraps to lock the FPS at 15 then speed it up x2 in playback speed in Vegas, crude but it works.

That's something that could make him perform a suicide schedule, he has already done that on Drawncansir 3 and it was killing him inside.

wait

try recording to a drive that isnt the boot drive/the one with windows etc on

that fixed it for me a while ago

i cant read m8 dont start shit or ill leak ur stunt

how old are your drives Mugetsu? the 6950 is a few years old now right so im assuming the drives are aswell, so the drives r/w speed might have slowed down causing lag.

Plus he had some GPU switches as well and neither worked.

I'm not sure, but I think they're at least 3 years old.

Also holy fuck guys, take your off-topic bullshit elsewhere.

This is GPU related or FRAPS. HDD are never the problem except when they are full. i suggest to install a really old version of FRAPS and check if its lagging. Im using two different versions (depends on which game im recording). Im using the old one to record in SAiVC.

I gave this a try with version 2.5.0 (with the old interface, so I'm assuming it's old enough) and it didn't seem to change a thing.

EDIT: I just realized a possible relation to this. Lately, watching videos from any hard drive has showed to be pretty laggy but this only started happening after I refit my GPU.

So I'm not sure what's the problem. My two HDDs becoming old-timers or something wrong with the way I fit the GPU into the slots.

EDIT2: I know this is the VC board, but SA and other games (such as Assassin's Creed Brotherhood) have become unplayably laggy when it was fine a week ago, and I've made no changes to anything other than mentioned in the first post.

Hmm, check the temps of your GPU? or didnt you already?

If its all okay, ask someone to use his gpu to check if its really the gpu, though before switching GPU do this: Reconnect all your cables (especially PCIe) of your pc. (also check the cable from your psu to motherboard, that cable once fucked up my system too! and i know that can cause alot of weird things)

Anyway, I dont think a harddrive can work slower or whatever, it works or its broken imo.

incase you dont know:

these also:

the cable you must check, my whole system once fucked up because this one wasnt plugged the right way!

anyway not my system above lolz!

I have one 6 pin and one 6x2 pin plugged into my GPU, but it's always been like that. I'll shut down my computer when I'm not as busy so I can take a good look and reconnect everything anyway though.

Using another pair wont be a bad choice aswell from time to time...they automatically get poor after a few years. you cant do anything against it.

I hope it works ;-)

Okay, update here:

I considered trying to have my brother use this GPU to see if that was the problem before but I don't think his PSU would hold up and give problems anyway so it wouldn't be of much help.
What I did manage to do though was open up the case and replug the cable that goes into the mobo like you mentioned and I reseated the GPU as well, along with the power cables that go into it from the PSU. Just to make sure I installed different drivers as well and there seems to be a grand difference of ZERO FRAMES compared to what I had before.

...Uninstall and reinstalling sounds like it wouldn't work but I'm tempted to give it a shot.

I remember having the same problem, altough my solution won't be  much of help to you. The thing is that my nvidia driver for some fucked up reason couldn't handle Vice City client, I had to wait for a driver update to be released. Even when it got released , for some time I couldnt record with the highest quality, had to disable AA and things like that. After several card driver updates the problem was solved. My card is GTX 650 ti, I don't even use fraps anymore since shadow play came out, records way smoother and is yet to lose any quality while doing so. Sorry , can't help ya :(. Good luck!

Think Shadow Play would run fine on an AMD card?

Can you remember what the solution was related to? Hardware, software or something?
