Title: If you need editing help/advice... ask and you shall receive.
Post by: Beat on October 27, 2012, 10:50:51 AM
I'm free for the next week and I'm in a helping mood. So from now till next Friday ask me ANYTHING editing-wise, whatever comes to your mind and I'll do my best to answer your question and give you all the help you need.

I'll be locking this topic on the 2nd of November. I'll also be checking it at least once every hour.. questionin' taym :euro:

UPDATE: I've decided I'll keep this topic up for as long as it lasts but with late replies.

Okey I'm recording ingame less than 20fps then when I try to play the recorded videos they look very laggy though I set the record at 25 fps on fraps. Can you give me some advices about having a smoother video without laggs?

Where did you find all your sound FX? I don't mean simple things like the sounds of a bike, but complex sounds which you can put to text movement or transitions. I tend to download the mp3 of a youtube video and use the sound there, I don't actually have a source for finding these sounds .

Just sayin' beforehand, FL studio is an audio producing (but in a way also editing) program, so it still counts. Here's my question:

What do you think of FL-chan? Use http://danbooru.donmai.us/post?tags=FL-chan&searchDefault=Search (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post?tags=FL-chan&searchDefault=Search) for reference.

Get an older version of Fraps. 2.9.8 propably.
Activate the "No sync" function in there and Fraps will automatically fill the gaps if your framerate is below 25.
That works, although it will look more weird the lower you go below 25.

And spare yourself the try; this does not work if you record with more than 25 fps.

Well from how you describe it, it seems like your PC can't handle recording very well. And theres an easy fix for that and theres two ways of doing it.

The first way is to record in 10fps with Fraps then speed the clip up in your editing software into x2.5 which turns into 25fps and it looks proper and smooth.

The 2nd way I don't really like that much but you can record in 15fps and then speed it up in your editing software into x1.666 but this can get choppy at times.

Edit: But make sure when you make moving angles, try to adjust the speed of your movement keeping in mind that this angle you're making will be at least twice as fast as you're moving ;)

Sound effects are a pain in the bum, I usually design mine by re-sampling/fine-tuning tons of ugly sounding free sound effects I find everywhere on the internet, whether YouTube or simply Googling them.

The bad part about Sound FX is that they don't have a grey area, because taking professional filmmakers for example, they make their own sound effects. It's called the Foley process and it's quite pricey.

Cute and cuddley.

how to make clips smooth as fuck? like this Chronometer - 24H Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5nwoolOAtI#ws)

It's not technically smooth, this video is rendered in 30fps due to Dogger originally being a VC editor hes used to rendering stuff in 30fps which is the proper fps in Vice City. But the proper FPS in SA is 25fps so it'd be proper to render in 25fps.

However 30fps will always look "smoother" than 25fps. So fuck proper and do whatever looks best to you :) I personally use 25fps.

what's that effect that looks like a transition with colors from sec 5 to sec 6

SKRILLEX - TheGT4sm's part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCV3V32IjFY#ws)

That effect is a plugin called Twitch originally made for Adobe's After Effects, but might possibly be available on the newer Sony Vegas versions.

However the effect can be done using no plugins in Sony Vegas but it'd take so much unnecessary time and effort. But the trick would be using Gaussian Blur and un-tick the Blue only or the Green only then increase the blur and then build up from there.

4K Resolutions:

I'm learning about the configuration of 3072p (4096x3072) - the 4K resolution. It' the resolution which gives you the 'orginal' tab that is above the 1080HD. Spectacular quality, don't know if it would go well on GTA. Here's an example:
EARTH Space-Sunrise 4k Resolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpM_7VT9Uyw#)

So I've got the whole shit n stuff. I've been having problems with the "MP4" rendering issue. It gives me different aspects and the quality decreases totally. I mean when it's rendering and I'm watching the display - that qualities WOW. I'm not going for .WMV at all, it's total shit.

I keep getting this error when I browse up the script, no matter what I typed in the path's and stuff. It won't ever get me right. Even when I remove the " before and after the path. Please help me in this one.

Format Recommendation:

What format do you recommend? I don't really care about the size. Quality and color-wise. Also, in KillaMarci's Aftermath you mentioned it was Blu-Ray. How did you do that? Is it really effective?

Color Correction Dimensions:

We all got this issue where the heavy sets of CC/Effects decreases our quality by 3 times. But, I've been seeing people like you and others who apply a lot, but yet keep the quality crystal clear. Please give me some advice on the usage of heavy CC's and effects while having the quality expected.

Display Mis-frame:

Not sure about this one, but sometimes I think that the video preview box in vegas isn't showing me what's really going to appear - not talking about quality, but about the masking, effects, etc.

It is going to be surely my computer.

I'm too much thankful to you, I was goofy but when I recorded nearly at 20fps then sped up at 25fps by the velocity of 125/100=1.25, 25/20=1.25 to reach 25 fps afterward I got a satisified smooth video.

All the versions are the same but as far as I understood. For example when you record at 18 fps, you will do math then to reach 30 fps.
30/18=1.67 then you're going to set velocity of the recorded video to 167 percent.

The masking effect is chromakeyer, hope you get my point. Beat is more sophisticated than me on these things  he will explain you that well.  :P

All Fraps versions are based on the same code and engine and they almost only release new ones to fix bugs. So they're all the same, if you still get low FPS you can use the method I showed Basium in my previous post.

For VC it'd be either: Rercord in 15fps and speed up to x2 or record in 10fps and speed up to x3.

Never ever do a recording like 18fps and try to multiply it to reach 30fps, it's even mathematically in-correct because you'll always get fractures... and that equals choppy video.

As for the masking effect, you're getting the CC bug because the CC is interacting with the mask. The best and probably the only way to avoid that is to finish up your shot with NO effects except for the masking and then render the shot into an uncompressed .avi (theres a setting for that) then apply the effects you want afterwards to the uncompressed .avi.

4K for GTA is stupid and it'd be too costy to get the gear to be actually able to record or even edit that. We don't even watch movies in 4K yet, you're a bit ahead of your time. But it'll eventually become standard like 1080p. When is that? ain't no prophet.

The megui question is a highly technical question not an editing question, and if I knew the answer for it I'd tell you but I do not.

The format I recommend is 5mbps 720p WMV or 8mbps 1080p WMV. MKVs are nice and they look amazing but they caused too much trouble with YouTube for me and they make old PCs lag which is never a good thing. And about the blu-ray thing, I was simply calling it names but it was technically similar to what you'd expect out of a blu-ray film or something in terms of quality.

Color corrections can never ever do anything to the video quality, if you feel your CC is making the video quality look terrible then tune it the hell down, there is no such thing as a "heavy" CC.

The only thing that can fuck your quality is contrast, thats the only thing I can think of that can actually give that feel, or playing too much with curves. But then that wouldn't be low quality thats just too much contrast.

Also protip: The dark areas in your video is where you'll get the most pixelation if your bitrate is low.

About the video preview thing, check that your rendering resolution size is a match to your project resolution size, and your aspect ratio is set to 1.

How did you make the blue boxes in this video?
NOCTiLUCENT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07mZKyZ99-E#ws)

First, I made the blue box in Vegas and made it a video of its own. So theres this video of a bluebox with rectangle moving inside from left to right or w/e.

Then in the actual video I used this square sample I made and tracked it using motion track in Vegas, frame by frame ;) Of course it could be done easier in After Effects if you track the movements of the object you want to place the box on and take that data and use it to animate the box.

I thought you said additional tools, so eventually I considered Simple Native Trainer as something standard  Well yeah I use that to spawn bots and apply different animations to them, change their models and outfits and voila. I usually get my lovely Slayer to do that but hes been away since forever :( and I'm sad because bots are very limited, you can only get them to do so little like follow you or stand still and talk on the phone or play a stupid ingame animation or simply fight you. When on the other hand if you act with humans, you can do waaaaaaay more sophisticated scenes. I'M WAITING ON YOU NICK.

NOCTiLUCENT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07mZKyZ99-E#ws)

How do you make that smooth slow motion effect in 1:26? Is it a plugin?

Yeah it can be done using a plugin called Twixtor, available for Adobe's AE or the latest versions of Vegas (10 and up I think). Though I did it using a default effect in AE called Timewarp.

how do the colors change? do you record the same angle and change the colors? or is it masking?  :hmm:

Nah I did it using Secondary CC, a default effect in Vegas. I simply selected the color of the car as the effected region in Secondary CC and it automatically masks out the red part of the car through the whole shot, and then you can do things to that affected region like change it's color or make it brighter or darker.

How to make this Water Ripple Wave effect in Chapter 2 of Memento in 10:36 to 10:37 ?

Memento 720p (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxhx938Nz8#ws)

Thats a NewblueFX effect called Ripple, it can be done without the plugin but it'd be too complicated so it's waaaaaay easier to get the plugin.

How do you pick music? Do you pick music before the video itself because it sets a mood? Do you pick music because of the stunts or do you pick stunts that match a song?

In Clarity, when Streem lands on the ground, around 2:08 or something, both of the landings have that earthquake shock thing. I never really found a good way to do that. How did you?

Your opening texts always have background movements like in Clarity. Where do you get those or do you make them yourself? And how do you make awesome texts because I find that the hardest part of editing a video.  :(

EDIT:// Awesome topic btw. Always wanted to have an effects topic in general.

EDIT2://SKRILLEX - TheGT4sm's part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCV3V32IjFY#ws)

TheGT4sm nearly always uses that sort of smart blur that makes everything looks more intense and full of velocity. What is that? (I really hope you get what I mean x)  .. )

1. Does the in-game resolution increase the recording quality?

2. Most editors nowadays use the Twixtor AAE plug-in or Timewarp to use slow-motion effects. I usually just record it in 90-110 fps and then slow it down via vegas. Is this a good point? Even though it won't go as slow as the rest, but it isn't THAT smooth. Any ideas on making it smoother? No RSMB please.

Will quickly answer these questions for you, since he isn't online.

1. Yes, you're giving Fraps more data to work with. Usually you should film at the same resolution as your final video, but you could always record at a higher resolution, and then scale it down for improved quality. However, it's not necessary, as it will only yield a slight improvement. Whatever you do, make sure you render your video at the same aspect ratio as your clips; you don't want to stretch pixels if you can avoid it.

2. You can't record stunts at 90fps, because replays are locked at a maximum of 25fps in San Andreas. If Fraps is trying to capture frames that don't exist, it'll record at a lower frame rate, even though the end result will be marked as a 90fps clip. Since you're limited to 25fps, the best way to do slow motion is with Timewarp or Twixtor. A little bit of motion blur can improve the quality of the effect, but you're better off tweaking the parameters of the effect until it looks as smooth as possible. If you don't have AE, you need to slow down the clips as normal, but make sure 'frame blending' is turned on.

I think with Sony Vegas you right click your clip, go to "switches" and enable "smart resample" (you should have that off by default, otherwise your clips will look weird). I haven't used Vegas in years, so it might be under a different option.

I'd say a 5mbps 1280x720 with 192kbps audio or a 9mbps 1920x1080 with 320kbps audio, whatever you prefer.

I do not use NewBlue, I only use Magic Bullet Looks recently. I use Vegas for sound editing and I use FL studio for music producing.

Well I can't think of anything right now but if you want a useful tool, I'd say Audacity is a pretty nice free tool to record HQ sound using w/e mic you have.

Yeah it seems like you're using around 3mbps bitrate settings which is quite bad, make sure the mode option under the "Video" tab in the render settings is set to something like Quality VBR and then go to the bitrate tab and say tick the Internet option and set it to 5 M or above.

(I really hope you get what I mean x)  .. )

I usually edit on the music I enjoy listening to the most but of course I have the stunts in mind, if the song is too off in comparison to the stunts I usually choose different music.

The earthquake thing is a frame by frame animation in pan n' crop, I simply move the video up and down every single frame to my liking till I get the desired effect over 50 keys or something.

Making good text is all about simplicity, never use overly stylish fonts and try to always have a slight filling behind the text, whatever that is... be creative about it. Using either too small text or too large text without being annoying often delivers a professional feel when done properly. I'd say an example of that is the intro I did for SHELLSHOCKED.

SHELLSHOCKED (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AoffmaCE1g#ws)

What's the average time you spend on a project?
What's the project you've spent the most time on?
What's your favorite video of yourself and why?
How do you think of new effects to use in your videos?

It depends on the project, I'm usually a supersonic editor and I finish things before I realize them but then with certain projects I just want to take my time and it some times gets extended up to 4 month... but I'd say my average is a week.

The project I've spent the most time on is 476. And that time is 4 month and I was working a tiny bit every day on that time.

I have two favourite videos of my self, the actual one is [UV]+ because it's the video where I crushed my limits and truly challenged my self, by an amount no one including my self could ever imagine. And also because it has a properly edited finisher, which is something I was never good at

The 2nd video is obviously The Aventador Redemption, and that is simply because its what I always wanted to do through the years and it got featured on Rockstar's official page and that just blows my mind. That video is my ultimate success so it has a place of it's own next to 476 in terms of favourites.

I think of new effects by listening to the music and imagining the video playing to it and I have enough context in my brain of this stuff to actually imagine a smooth version of what I want in my head. Usually what I imagine is very sophisticated and most of the time I can't do it but it's too good that I set it as a goal and work on it and then whatever I end up with usually does the job. Though theres an exception to that which was [UV]+ because I imagined the effects in my head and my challenge to my self is to exactly deliver that effect in the actual video, and I did so =P

I've always been interested in how you would go about planning a project, more specifically 476. I remember reading your notes on it about how the sections of the video were split up into the colours of the rainbow (the 4th, 7th and 6th colour), and in the opening scene there was a woman standing in the road which I only noticed after you mentioned.

It's little things like that, that really amaze me, and I was just wondering do you write down a list of everything you want to include, or draw out certain ideas, or just simply go with the flow and do things as soon as they come to your mind? Or maybe you do something completely different, who knows .

As he said earlier, he only uses Magic Bullet for CC's. For simple other effects on AE, he uses Twixtor/Twitch. Just saying if to make his answer quicker, but can't really give good tips here other than to just focus around what colors are in the clip and the colors you'd like to set. Read around Google a bit about color correcting, could be useful.

Ah, can you tell me what programs do you use for those images? I heard you never used Photoshop. And do you create those graphics yourself or a bit of mixtures from movies, etc?

I use Vegas and After Effects.

Magic Bullet Looks is the best plugin to use, and don't combine it with anything else because it's a complete color-correcting station thingy that has everything you'll ever need. Also it's interface is clean and eye-pleasant. Theres also tons of templates you can apply then play around with to learn different techniques. It requires a decent PC when it comes to rendering/previewing though.

Hi.

I'd never use chromakeyer to show two clips at the same time in GTA, that is if you're talking about the typical two-stunters-one-stunt scenario.

I usually mask one of the clips on top of the other, frame by frame. Or you can apply a cookie cutter on one of the clips and animate it to follow the stunter but that method isn't very accurate if they stunters intersect.

You can do that in Vegas. First open the "Track FX" of your audio layer, then you should find Track EQ already applied, you'll usually find 4 points. Usually the point numbered "4" controls the highs so you pull that down and it makes your audio sound muffled, if you pull both the highs (4) and the lows (1) down it'll give you that  distorted muffled sound.

If it's too complicated like The Aventador Redemption, I have to write it down. Otherwise I go with the flow.

I can answer your camhack problem.

Download 'dx8vb.dll' file from dlldump.com or just type it into google.

After you download this file, cut and paste it into your SysWOW64 folder (C:\Windows\SysWOW64 )

Run camhack as admin

you're done

The fix Phamus posted is the right one, it should work for you.

And yes I use Vegas 8 Pro because it's the most stable, I also use After Effects CS6 because it's simply the most most recent version. Unlike Sony.. when Adobe releases a new version for it's software it's actually a better version not the other way around. So always get the new versions for your Adobe software, but never do so for Sony

Press C in the replay, the go back in game. Press "1" (numpad) to enable Camhack freecam, move with 8 4 6 2 from the numpad. Place it where you want, then F3, and you move your cam. You must put the view in the same angle you will record your cam, otherwise, the sky will look horrible (it'll get an epilepsy)

Which way is fastest in Masking ?

It depends what you're doing. If you're trying to place two stunts into one camera angle, the fastest way would be to create a rectangular mask in After Effects, and animate it with keyframes, as long as the two stunts don't overlap in the clip. If they do, then you need to do it frame by frame with more precision. The fastest way to do that is with the rotobrush tool in After Effects CS5 or later.

If you want to mask an object or gap in the clip (eg. Beat's glowing tower at the end of Ultraviolet), then the rotobrush is also the best way to do it, as you need a high level of accuracy for this type of effect. Masking can also be done within Sony Vegas, and you might find that more comfortable, but it's honestly much slower than using After Effects.

Title: Re: If you need editing help/advice... ask and you shall receive.

A plugin called Magic bullets and a program called Looks builder. You will drag the CC onto the layer chosen which includes the clip or onto the clip, you know how to add CC on a clip afterward you need Looks Builder in order customazing the CC you want.

I highly doubt Beat render his videos in WMV and the resolution required to get a 720p video is 1280x720 as he always does. I'm not sure if these settings are right but you have to take a look.

You may change your framerate to 30 or 25 fps depending on the framerate of your recorded videos or the clips that you adjusted their velocity.

Btw the bit rate is about 5-6 Mbps/s.  :P
Title: Re: If you need editing help/advice... ask and you shall receive.

You just need a good CPU then you will render with no problems.  ;)
Title: Re: If you need editing help/advice... ask and you shall receive.
Post by: VaNilla on November 07, 2012, 11:02:18 AM
Basium, I wouldn't recommend using CBR for WMV stunt videos, VBR (variable bit rate) improves both the quality and the file size of the final output. For 720p, make sure you're using a bitrate between 6-8mbps, for 1080p between 12-15. As for the audio, set it to 48khz and between 128-256kbps. I would recommend 256kbps, since it doesn't make a huge difference to your file size, but the audio will sound a lot better :)

EDIT: Another thing; if you record at 30fps, don't render at 29.970fps. You will see "ghosting" in every frame, since it's not the same frame rate as your clips. 29.970fps is used for NTSC video files.
