I don't think you should judge j-pop though, it may not sound intelligent at first but if you dig deeper you'll find some really incredible stuff that can rival with well known art-pop artists from the west. There are two types of j-pop, you obviously heard only one of them.

Also, one of the greatest japanese albums of all time, Vision Creation Newsun by Boredoms combines many genres including j-pop and jazz and it's honestly alot better and more innovative at the same time than most classic and modern jazz artists I heard so far.
