LAGS
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:29:55 AM »
... Are annoying. I recently re-installed Windows after a massive virus invasion, everything seemed fine until I bumped into this problem. Every 15-20 minutes I get this weird periodic lag and it lasts for about 10-15 minutes and not only while playing games but also while watching Youtube videos and everything lags in general.

I only have Vice City and Counter Strike 1.6 installed at this moment and these games should fly even with a shitty computer like mine and these games do fly, for about 15-20 minutes. I even cleaned PC coolers and crap, still no luck.

This never happened before, I'm guessing it might be the Windows or something? I have no idea, you guys got a clue what the problem might me? Would appreciate any help, thanks in advance guys. :)

Give us some more info about your PC Specs.

Also download this: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
And make a screenshot of it and post it here.

Does it lag or does you pc full on stop, then continue as it was normal again? If it's the latter, your cpu may be going, because this is what happened when mine went.

Something might be activating e.g. a program or ant virus scan ? =S

You could try turning the computer on, open task manager, click the processes tab, take a screenshot, watch a youtube video or something until the lagg starts, they open task manager and take another screenshot and compare the two to see is something else has started running and maybe causing the lagg.

(Make sure if you have a program open to wait until lagg starts you close it before checking task manager or that will appear in the processes aswell)

It's pretty weird lol, since the day I reinstalled windows, I've been having these problems but after I posted this topic, the lags stopped. :L Been stunting for about 2-3 hours now and no lags at all. Thanks for the suggestions guys and sorry for taking your time, I'll see how it goes and if the lags appear again, I'll take your advices, thanks once again people. :P

Is that all it gives you? There should be more..

Anyways, leave that programm on, play a game for like 30minutes, and screenshot it again.

Also: PC Specs? :P

Hey you got a celeron :P That's almost ancient enough to sell it on ebay for a thousand bucks. Anyways. Your CPU seems to be overheating. Whenever someones game starts to lag after a few minutes then its overheating. The rated max. temp for your CPU is at 65°C, it shouldnt go over that. As you can see it has already hit 64°C. When the CPU reaches that temperature, it throttles (e.g. downclocks itself to prevent damage). Your CPU basically looses speed and your game starts to lag due to lag of processor performance.

What to do:
Take of the CPU heatsink, clean up all the mess thats under there (the thermal paste probably already got hard as fuck after ~5 years (?) of usage). Make sure you don't damage the CPU while taking the heatsink of, from my experiences theese CPU's often stick to their heatsink because of the 5years old thermal grease. Use a hairdryer and a thin knife to get it off their (the hairdryer has to be pretty hot BUT not too hot!)  Once you got the CPU off you get some fuel or some other extremely strong cleaning stuff and clean off the  rest of the thermal paste. Once youve done that, apply new thermal paste to the CPU (a very thin code, im sure you can find lots of tutorials on youtube) and put the heatsink back on. Make sure it sits tight. Then boot up and check the temperatures.

You think your lag is bad? It took jesus three days to respawn.
