I was testing some codec settings earlier today to see which one was the best with almost identical settings.
I used a 50mb, 9 second recording of a stunt without any audio and compared the results and here's some information and a rating.
I hope this can help you to save some time.
Please note that the results may vary for different kinds of clips but this was just a short test so don't hang me if you get better results with a different codec :)

Codec: 3ivX (http://www.3ivx.com/index.html)[/u]
Version: 4.5.1
Rendertime: 20 seconds
Kilobits per second: 2543
Filesize: 2716kb
Quality (1-10) : 7
3ivx was definately the codec which rendered the clip fastest but the quality wasn't that great and the clip became a little too dark.
The codec is extremely easy to use, it has few options and everyone can get some decent quality with it.
3ivx is a free codec.

Codec: DivX (http://www.divx.com/)[/u]
Version: 6.0.3 Pro
Rendertime: 2 Minutes
Kilobits per second: 2610
Filesize: 2787kb
Quality (1-10) : 9
DivX gave me better quality like the other, it wasn't a big difference from DivX to XVid but it was slightly better.
DivX is like 3ivx, very easy to use.
The only bad thing about DivX is that the rendertime was the longest.
DivX comes in a free version and a more advanced version you have to pay for.

Codec: XVid (http://www.xvid.org/)[/u]
Version: 1.1.0 Beta 2
Rendertime: 1 Minute and 30 Seconds
Kilobits per second: 2335
Filesize: 2495kb
Quality (1-10) : 8
XVid is a wellknown codec but it's very hard to use for a beginner, there's a lot of settings you can choose to play with and it's easy to feel lost.
The quality is great and the rendertime was ok.
XVid is a free codec.
Finally here's the settings i used.

DivX:

BTW: I'll add the wmv codec and some screenshots of the quality later
-
Lovely dude. :)
When reading your review, I went over to the XviD side.
-
Can you add >> X264 (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/x264_Video_Codec.htm) << to the list? I've started using it for some other non-GTA projects and find it's better than XVid, but I want to see it in a proper comparison.
P.s. Great thread
-
I guess i can... can i have your settings so i can test them?
-
My current settings won't be that great for this test, they're set up for very high quality rendering.
-
Great review man.
Could you include a link to where you can download each one too :)
-
Click on the codecs name (not the picture)
-
This is brilliant, cheers man.
For some reason my dad bought the better version of DivX a while back, I haven't played around with it yet though.
-
If you're a vegas user the x264 codec opens up a lot of options, my next vid will probably be in mp4 format.
-
Nero Recode?
-
did u render with vegas?
you can get better results with other programs like virtualdub.
-
I used Virtual Dub but it wouldn't look any worse/better if i used Vegas.
The codec and the settings is all that matters.
-
i get better results with virtualdub than vegas.
-
That's not the programs fault, you must have changed the resolution or something in the project or the render settings.
-
i always use same res.
-
I rest my case
-
I don't see any difference rendering outside of vegas, it's just more hassle to do.
-
Sure, maybe the good progs..
-
daffy, just letting u know, those xvid settings have worked great for me, just what i needed, thanks
-
Sorry to bring up this, but when I use the XviD codec to compress a stunt in Virtualdub, I couldn't open it in Vegas. I used some other codecs and it worked...
-
You can't open clips rendered in XVid in Vegas, that's just how it is.
But you shouldn't compress the clips you're making a vid with.
-
yeah, try to compress as little as possible, and then render when you're done. Buy more memory if it's a HD space problem.
-

Ohh ok, I've been rendering before I compress since my first video lol.
-
if you feed the clips you render with enough bitrate they get small and lose almost no quality.
-
Higher bitrate = Higher filesize...
-
*bump*
I'm confused.
Do you render crappily first with Vegas, then re-render with the XVid/DivX?
oh yeah how the hell do you install xvid? :saywhat:
-
You gotta render the vid with a lossless codec and then render it again with Virtual Dub.
-
You install XviD by clicking on the install button.
-
*bump* i pinned this since it may be usefull :)
-
Which codec do you use. ;)
-
Xvid
-
In case anyone cares.....
Here are some of my results compressing the same file:
From a file edited in Vegas (with audio) at res. 512 x 384 : size 6,011,922 KB
(I know..sick)
with Daffy's recomendations,
3ivx : size after rendering with VD = 132,742 KB
divx : size (after vd) = 116,236 KB
I found the divx quality a little higher.
with Kenny's specs,
http://www.gtastunting.com/forums/index.ph...opic=10560&st=0 (http://www.gtastunting.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10560&st=0)
3ivx : size (after vd) = 71,413 KB
divx : size (after vd) = 68,390 KB
again the divx was a little better.
I have yet to try the xvid codec.
Daffy's specs definitely produce a better product..... ..but a huge file.
Still, Kenny's specs produce a file that is half the size (for my project anyway) but more "pixley".
Now, my question is.....when should one put the audio track in? Before or after video compression? Does it matter?
-
I tried Xdiv - The status window crashed and I couldn't record
I tried Dvix payed - couldn't create AVI frame
I tried 3vix - The recorder just crashes
I'm using your settings on Camastasia Recorder 3, What's wrong!?
-
mrkaki:
Disable the status window in Xvid, you don't need it.
Try using another recording software, like Fraps.
Labrat:
That's up to you, i recommend rendering the audio for itself as a wav file and then importing it to Virtual Dub to render it there.
-
I use the x246 Codec ! without virtual dub , i have tried all (xivd,mpeg4,divx)
but that has the best quali result and the smallest file !
-
delete
-
I Will Try it!!! Thanks Daffy
-
daffy your just Genious
-
Thanks i guess
-
I just watch MQ vids and they seem to be fine...
the only thing I can think of thast would make me want to have the highest quality is if i wanted to burn vids to a dvd or something...
what's the big point of having super-high quality vids, that makes the quality slightly better? The stunts and editing are still the same...
-Anders
-
Cause it looks better.
-
I still think the best quality render besides the .mp4, (which I can't get to work for some reason ), is the WMV 720p Extreme Quality one that daffy posted some time ago. It is lovely
-
AVI ist better than that .
-
thanks daffy i will use it for S ............ solo
-
Personally, I think x264 is the best looking codec when tweaked properly. Otherwise XviD is the way to go for me.
