Title: Pitching an idea
Post by: Jason on June 01, 2015, 06:14:23 PM
So I've been supposedly working on a map mod for many months now, but I haven't got the motivation to make a full blown map, and I'm rurunning out of ideas, so it's got me thinking

If I made a tutorial on making sketchup models and the full process of conversion to getting them to work ingame, who would be interested in contributing models and putting together a community map?

I'm able to model stuff in C4D. Some time ago I exported .obj files and converted them to .dff using 3ds Max additionally in order to be able to add them to the game (SA).
My dedication is very low currently, but I could probably model/texturize very few objects if I find the time and mood. :P

I know how to model in Maya, but there's no way I can export to dff. Busy with school right now but come summer I might have some time to do for it, though I'd probably have to download max/sketchup so I can export to dff.

Yeah my method requires Max.

I do have Max at school, but only two weeks left or so now so doubt I'll be able to utilize it. But I should be able to get a hold of it at home as well. In a worst case scenario I could just send you or someone else the .obj and whoever gets it can convert and add it to the game.

That's the part that makes me lose motivation haha it's tedious and time consuming.

I could help in some way. I've been using Cinema 4D for some time now but I'm still not that experient.
Some years ago I was planning on making a huge San Andreas map but after ~450 hours on it I felt like I had 2% of it completed and I lost my whole motivation. It was consuming too much time.

I can say that I have some designing experience and could probably get my motivation back if we would be at least a few people working on it.
Been kinda busy these days, tho.

Well if we're doing this we'd probably need one person to put it all together anyway. I think there's a DFF import/export for Blender as well which is a free software, which makes it a lot easier to get a hold of, might check out if I can work with that in terms of exporting a dff.

I've done some modeling in 3ds, blender (and a little in sketchup) in the past and I know some basics so I might be up  for some help. I prefer 3ds max, most comfortable 4 me.

I've made some small houses as well, but I'm not down for installing them all into the game. I did that before with like 50 of them and it was hell. The tutorial would be lovely though  :P

I have almost no knowledge about modeling. neither time to learn how to do it properly. I'm here just to support, y'all gotta finish it! A new stunting map is always welcome in my VC folder, good luck people!

I'd have lots of ideas, sadly no clue how to sketch something or convert it ingame

Hi Jason,

I have done this in the past... Sketchup >> Zmod >>MooMapper >> in game. I was modeling my old neighborhood so I can drive around in VC style. I even took pictures of my local roads and grass/side walks with a digital camera. They were just like the ones in 'gta3.img' it's also where I took a lot of my inspiration. Thing is prelighting...all my models were dark. That was the part where my brain always stopped working.

Post pics or something. Share :)

Sketchup is very simple...but the best way to make a map is to REALLY take a look how Rockstar build Vice City by using Moo Mapper or something so you can move around the objects... you have to make pieces...not big grand shit.

I WAS going to make a video tut but I cant find any decent recording software, plus my mic broke :'(

OBS has a rather shitty quality, but it's used a lot for long tuts because the filesize is so low. Sucks about the mic tho, you could always make one of those 'Writing live in notepad' tutorials

I'd chop off my fingers before I go down that path

I can not second what Simon said. OBS allows a target bitrate and is actually very good in addition with an iGPU. Even the crappy HD4000 is able to output 1920x1080 @ 60 FPS with bitrates beyond 60 Mbps in realtime.

Ohhh I hate those so much especially when it's someone that takes forever to write a single word.
