Title: HD issue
Post by: Reaper on December 10, 2012, 12:47:16 PM
Has anyone had an external drive that has started clicking obnoxiously.

I got this external HD like a year ago and it has always done that clicking sound when I booted it up. But now it has started doing it all the time, like a few seconds after I boot it up it starts clicking non-stop.

It's just a basic 1TB iOmega external HD.

I'm fearing that the worst will happen and it will corrupt/ break completely, though it still has some warranty left.

According to a friend of mine such noises are a sign that it's dying. However mine has been clicking for like 3 years now, so I'm not sure. I have the same "problem" though.

The Click of Death?
HDDs usually make scratching kind of sound but a clicking sound may mean that is on its way out. I would just say make sure you have it backed up and wait and see what happens or buy another.

Yeah, it's definitely getting too old or atleast worn out. I had an external HDD once that started clicking but I thought it'd stop after a while and that thought lead to me losing a bunch of stuff :cheersad:
