tutorial: brushed metal/engraving

1. Create new document, 400x400px, and fill it with grey, I used #989898
(http://img348.echo.cx/img348/6079/tut16pw.png)

2. Add noise (filter>noise>add noise), amount: 25, distribution: gaussian, monochromatic.

3. Add motion blur (filter>blur>motion blur), Distance: whatever you want, I used 30, angle:0.

4.*optional* Duplicate the layer, and set the top layer's blending mode to soft light. hit Ctrl+U on the top layer. In the pop-up box, check colorize. Set the lightness and hue to your liking, saturation: 20. This gives the metal a nice tint.

That's it. Note: I cut the edges, because they didn't look good. Now to engraving.

1. You can use the metal texture we just made for the background. Take the text tool, and type some white text where you want it.

2. Rasterize the text layer and duplicate it. Select the top layer and hit Ctrl+I. This will make the top layer's text black.

3. Set both layer's blending mode to soft light.

4. Grab the move tool and select the white text layer. On the keyboard, press the down arrow once and the right arrow once.

If it's too light, duplicate the black text layer. If it's too dark after that, lower the opacity. Here's my finished thing:

As you can see you can engrave almost anything (brushing, text) on any material (metal, wood) using the same method.

Here's an image I used brushed metal in:

My current sig has engraving in it.
