Illustrator is a program to work above 600dpi which Photoshop can't handle. Basically Illustrator is the same as PS with some extra features including working on extremely high resolutions. For example, if you try to use Gaussian Blur into some low-res job in PS, you'll have a piece of shit right infront of you.

Also, IL is used for "drawings" such as the one he made there, working with vectors and creating your own shapes much easier than in PS
