I like the second one more, though the theme is worse.

Some was for me, some wasn't. I'm still pretty mediocre, I need a new style, I do the same shit over and over.

Hmm, yeah I agree they're all kinda 'make a background then stick a render on it'.  Not having a go or anything, just trying to help .  I suggest getting some good smudge settings, and playing around with those...add me on msn and I can send you a couple I've come up with which you can get some awesome looking backgrounds from.

Usually I use pre-made smudge, grunge, and fractal brushes because I'm a nub still, then I just mess with the layer properties until it looks pretty, then I shove a render on, feather it, lower opacity or set the layer setting to overlay, and then I slam some text on and use it, and most people think I'm a god at some other forums :|

Sometimes I use the blur, sharpen, and burn/sponge tools or the filter gallery, but not a lot.

Where do I edit bursh settings? Just on the side of the brush menu? I use that all the time.

Yeah, you want to smudge a copy of the render to make the background, then slightly smudge the edges of the render too.

Do you have an image for an example?

I'll go get one.  You probably don't wanna use the preset smudges, they're not all that great really .

Don't use renders  Use images! Tis the way forward. Pre-made backgrounds.

They are all good, but I agree with Alex about the slapping a render on, try and work the sig around the render, that helps to keep it all in focus with eachother.

I've done that with some images.

Like:

I made the background because I thought it looked good with the render.

That background blends 10x better with the render than others. Although maybe add some darker spots to the left hand side of the background, otherwise it can look a bit too plain.

Apart from that though, stick with that kind of method.

I think stuff that clashes is prettier than stuff that matches =/
