IMy computer won't load Windows XP. I've tried in safe mode but it stops loading on a file called SPTD.sys. Can anyone think of a way to fix it?
-
doesnt sound gd if safe mode aint workin, youll probably have to reformat. if you got any info you need on the HDD take it out of the case and put it in an external and run it on another computer.
-
Well I'm using a laptop so taking out the HDD isn't a great idea for me. Besides, I already backed up the important stuff. How do you reformat the HDD?
-
Get or "GEEEEEEET" YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN! *wink* a copy of XP. Use someone elses computer to BUUUUUUUUUUY/burn it.
-
I already have a copy. But when it says its starting Windows it stops loading Windows.
-
You might have to edit your bios for it to check the CD before windows or if theres a boot menu when you startup(mine is F12, should say somewhere on the screen) check boot from DVD drive or CD drive, whatever it says.
-
Trying that now. Thanks.
-
Np, I had that problem too, then my brother told me how to do the bios thing lol.
-
Still doesn't work. It enters Windows Setup, then it says "Setup is loading "xxx". Then it says "Setup is starting Windows" and it stays that way. How long does it take for it to start Windows because I might just be too impatient.
-
It took like 4-6 minutes for setup to load for me.(The full thing)
-
Well its been like 2 hours now and my computer is not THAT slow lol. Do you have any other ideas?
-
have you got the xp disc in the machine? stupid question but could be a simple mistake
-
You could also see if your laptop came with a partitioned harddrive that has a recovery program or whatever. My compaq had one and I think my current one had one before I formated it.
-
No it didn't come with a partitioned harddrive. I left it on that screen all night and it didn't turn on. And yes the disc is in the machine lol
-
I'm outta ideas then dude. Try taking it to a shop is my last word of advice. =/
-
Yeah I figured it would come to that. Thanks for the help.
-
Update: tried installing Linux and it has the same problem. It reaches "loading kernal 100%" and it stays like that. I'm guessing a problem with the hardware?
-
I'm guessing it is.

Possibly a dodgy cd drive. If your computer supports being booted off a usb drive, there are workarounds for it. Check in bios to see if USB boot is an option.
