I managed to burn out both of my NVidia GeForce 8800 GTX's. I've had them SLI'ed and running together playing Crysis, but I pushed them too far today. All the flawless running hid faulty driver updates, eventually not warning me of any danger, eventually destroying my new video cards.
Ordered two replacement cards today, still 8800 GTX's. They'll be here in about a week.
I started reading up on what it takes to run Crysis. A system that runs Crysis at full blown quality without dying is a 4 Card Dual SLI'ed system. I can't remember what cards, but they themselves each cost $800. I've got money, but not that much to just be spending on video cards alone. Although it feels like I am now for my ignorance.
I won't be running my GTX's like that again. What I don't get is when I clicked the optimization button in Crysis, it recommended running it all at 'Very High', and that's what I ran it at. Why would it tell me that if my system really can't handle it?

the 8800 ultra is the best gaming card atm, its not 800 ana afaik it supports tri-sli, not quad
Could be something else besides for driver updates that burned them out, when you get your new pair... make sure your temps are not going above 90c.
-
lol, that is real funny.
-
What PSU do you have? If you've been running two Ultra's on a smiling mongoose 450W power supply, then you know why this happened.
-
lol, that is real funny.
It's hardly funny when some one loses $900 of equipment.

Fucken x2, don't be a douchebag.
-
That sucks man.
-
Damn I feel sorry for you...Try getting some fans etc. or a good psu like RAD mentioned
-
Must suck man, thats why i have most GFX settings on low. My PC Is pretty shit.
-
What the hell is with you guys and quality?
-
Not really owned, and I really don't see what you guys are finding funny either. My ignorance is my ignorance and I am the one laughing here, because you know why? I HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY NEW ONES WHENEVER I WANT TO. It's called having a good job, working your ass off, and getting rewarded very nicely for it. Not too many of you KIDS can touch that.
I would go ahead and upgrade to a newer system since stuff is already out, my Mobo is already a year and a half old, but the point was to build a reliable system. My rig has proven to work. I wouldn't give it up for a new one that I had to constantly rework the BIOS and format my drives for.
RAD: I run an 850. I calculated and my system at 100% would use just over that, but no system ever runs at 100%, so the power is safe.
Feron: Did I say Quad SLI? I meant 4 cards in Dual SLI mode. Maybe the whole graphic setup to run Crysis at Very High was $800 dollars. I'll do some more extensive research when I get the time to correct facts.
I had something to say about kids and their self-endowed intelligence levels, but I'll save that to myself. It's really mean, and I'm not a mean person.
You've been graced by my presence. You now have my permission to feel privileged.
Laughing My Ass Off.

Ouch!

bad luck matey, good luck with the new ones
-
I'd go on a rampage if that happened to me.

4 cards in dual SLI mode? never heard of that before.
-
I know that 3 is poss. No idea about 4
-
WTH, I don't get this? Don't you have a waranty or something on those cards?
-
I think warrentys only cover problems that occur with the cards running at factory-shipped settings. I dunno if he O/C'ed the cards which would void the warrenty, or whether the cards never even had warrentys.
-
That's weird, my overclocked 8800GTS 320MB runs Crysis just fine on very high settings. No problems except for some occasional slowdowns in more demanding areas. Of course SLI setups run much hotter than single card, so it's really important to have good airflow in the case.
-
You're 8800GTS runs it fine? Then how come my two GTX's together can't wipe it. Mine aren't even the superclocked ones. They are the lowest priced ones, but they can be overclocked though, hence why I didn't buy the more expensive superclocked GTXs. Should I probably overclock them then? The air around the cards never goes above 53 C, so temp issues aren't really issues.
Or would it be settings in my NVidia Control Panel? I have those set to pretty high, with the cards rendering alternating frames. So each card gets one frame, which should make it much faster. Splitting the frames between each card causes pixel shifting if either card mistimes just a hair.
But your running a GTS which is only a model down from mine and yet you play Crysis just fine. What's up with my setup then?
I've been staying away from overclocking, but even so shouldn't I be able to run Crysis?
This is annoying. I have the equipment, but again it isn't working as well as it should.
Let me get a good understandable list of my Rig together and we'll see what this thing really should be doing.
-
different settings, different performance

1280x1024 2x aa right?

hahahahaha x2

You should run Crysis pretty well without overclocking, depends a bit on your resolution. I'm not sure what the problem is, the cards shouldn't just die like that. I also doubt it was heat because the G80 core can handle more than 100C without failure.
I use 1280x1024, no AA.

I'm playing Crysis on low-mid with my 8800GTS Whatever , 8800Ultra is gonna come in a few days/weeks
-
don't see the point in buying an ultra at this time killamarci
-
Just be cause the 9xxx series are coming? :huuh: Don't really think they'll be so much better.
-
in a few weeks time it'll be cheaper

9600gt gets benchmarked
I guess its a un-offical benchmark though
-
instead of spending $900, why dont u just buy an xbox and play crysis on there? it wont blow and i doubt it costs more than £300...
