Title: Guitar(ist) Thread
Post by: ofthemountain on January 07, 2008, 12:49:16 PM
Hey, haven't seen one of these around so I thought I'd make one.

Basically anyone who plays guitar can talk about what they're learning to play, what they're playing at the moment, post riffs they have written or clips of them playing or whatever, or ask for tips from other guitarists on the forums. Oh and talk about gear, give advice on guitar buying, disscuss the best guitarists and such.

Right now I've just learned to play all of In the Fire by Roadrunner United. Gonna learn Cemetary Gates by Pantera soon.

Shred away!

I'm learning War by Burzum. Got the intro perfect in about 15 minutes. Finished learning I Could Care Less by Devildriver. Can play it perfectly with the song now.

meh, I haven't played my eletric guitar for like 1 year now, I prefer my acoustic one.

There isn't any song I couldn't play tbh, but the songs I like are kinda simple, so...

Rod, upload some clips of you playing .

I've had a guitar for about a year now, never really taken any lessons or made a massive effort to lean it, but do play it when I'm bored.  Had it repaired, cleaned, polished, set up, and new strings/knobs put on today, so its as good as new .

Learn the... (crap, brain fart)... scales first. Thats what I did. Most songs are in a same 5 note range so once you are able to pick out a note you can play around and find the scale that its based on.

Lamb of God - Redneck opening riff is one of my personal favourites, along with.....Dopeman and a couple of others.  About the best ever, its pretty much down to opinion, some of the most famous ones have been mentioned.  Metallica have a load, Seek & Destroy, MoP, Enter Sandman...they're all universally recognizable.

911tabs right here too. Yeah, Metallica's well written riffs are why they are so big - their song writing skills set them apart from lots of other bands.

Favourite riff for me... Faith No More - Suprise! You're Dead! opening riff is pretty fun. God Forbid have some tasty riffs also; one in interlude of To The Fallen Hero owns. Welcome To The Jungle is also an old favourite.

Probably the break-down rhythm beat in Freezing Moon by Mayhem. There is a clip of them playing it at Wacken open air in 04 with two guitarists, and it is by far the most evil sounding riff I've ever heard, and it's so simple.

Although, the Rhythm in Aika Multa Muistot by Sentenced once the finale kicks in is pretty damn sweet. First time I heard it, it sent shivers running up and down my back. It's incredible, the feeling that comes off it.

E pentatonic is like, the most basic scale there is.

True, but there's a lot of stuff you can do with it, and you can add a lot to the scale as far as the surrounding notes in each respective key.

I'm learning melodic minor at the moment in fact I have the patterns in each key in front of me, very nice scale.

ok then, now that we've established the obvious lets move on shall we?

now I came up with a little major tapping lick rather than the standard A minor triad that most guitarists use, on the key of G on the high E string goes from a G to an Ab to a Bb back to an E natural on the 12th fret, its pretty easy if you have big fingers that can handle the stretch here's the tabbed version for those of you who dont know theory.

E--3-6-8h12----7-10-12h14----14-15-18h20----|

let me know what you think, its just a start anyway.

what do you mean for those who dont know theory? How would you have posted it in musical form instead of in tab form? Tab is 100x easier. I enjoy tapping the most, I tap a lot. (on the guitar)

Theory doesnt exactly mean sheet music, but for example, I explained it in the sense, that I named the note names, the key, if it was major or minor, and the timing signature (for those who know theory like I do), which I forgot to mention (4/4 for this case) and posted a tab for those who dont.

How do you re-string? Because usually 99% of all tuning and string breakage problems are either from, not stringing your strings correctly, or sharp saddles.

What kind of guitars does everyone have?

I've got a Gibson SG Standard, Schecter Tempest Custom, and a Takamine EG561-C

As far as songs go... I've kinda grown out of the whole learning songs, like I guess it's fun when you first start playing but I personally feel more satisfied when I write my own stuff. I've played a bunch of shows with a couple different bands with different styles so I just feel a little bit bored learning songs now.

Does anybody else play shows?

If you're gonna be playing metal, I say Alder, Basswood can be EQ'd down to fit a nice metal profile, but Alder not only being a classic tone wood has the versatility that basswood doesnt have, basswood is more for shred and neoclassical, but i'd choose Mahogany if I had the chance.

When I play my V sitting down I have the middle of the V resting on my right upper leg and I sort of clinch my legs together to keep it stable. The neck is on an angle instead of horizontal obviously which is something I've gotten used to and I find quite comfortable. Otherwise I just play standing.

I'm looking for a certain Metallica tab... but I don't know the name of the song. I heard it on the radio a few days ago, but they never said the name. The only thing I remember was this part.

--14-14-14--10-10-10--8-8-8--6-6-6--------------
-----------------------------------------------------------

I doubt that's actually the correct tab, but it sounds similar to that. Play it pretty fast, in sets of 3 (of course). Any help would be appreciated.

Sadly, no. I was trying to look for it on ultimate-guitar.com... However, there's a ton of Metallica tabs to look through, so I can't.

If you're confused, that part shows up in the song as a regular riff... It's not just once or twice.

alright so what's everyone's favorite time signature to play in? I like standard 4/4 timing or 6/8, 6/8 gives it a slower heavier feel but you can do soooo much with it, and the groove is so awesome.

Dude, learn some theory so you can apply it to the instrument, learn your scale and chord formulas so you can make some interesting sounding stuff, its not that hard, as long as you apply yourself.

4/4 is the easiest to write stuff and for playing along to chord progressions.

I personally like 3/4 timing cause I'm into more progressive style music so that offbeat keeps you a little bit focussed.

I'm looking for a certain Metallica tab... but I don't know the name of the song. I heard it on the radio a few days ago, but they never said the name. The only thing I remember was this part.

-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
--14-14-14--10-10-10--8-8-8--6-6-6--------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------

I doubt that's actually the correct tab, but it sounds similar to that. Play it pretty fast, in sets of 3 (of course). Any help would be appreciated.

Searching...................................................................................................seek and destroy  nah, I think I have read those tabs somewhere

I like 3/4 but its a bit too staccato for me, if i used the right terminology, that's why I like 6/8, its double its timing and its longer and more drawn out, which makes a heavier, slower sound, even if you're just playing clean or acoustic chords.

Also to ask:

Which is better, Ibanez INF1 and INF2 pickups or IBZ designed by EMG pickups?

those are shitty pickups. Just spend a little extra and you get wicked sound. Go for some Dimarzio PAF Joe in the bridge and PAF Fred at the neck. Or evos, those sound great. So I guess, your lame metal pedal would sound less lame.

Yeah except I don't have the budget. From the pricing in my country those 2 cost me about an extra 250 dollars which I do not really have to spend on pickups.

Don't tell him that, dont you know that your amp is 90% of your tone?

Dont worry much about the pickups now, what kind of amp do you have? if its a tube amp, then yes go ahead and upgrade your pickups or pickup an EHX Metal Muff (great overdrive/high gain pedal). In case you dont, then save up for a decent tube amp, doesnt have to be very big, in fact most small tube combos are louder than most solid state amps and sound better, how big is your budget?

there's no such thing as a budget. you cant afford something you want, save. It's not a hard concept, you get a job and earn money which you can either spend or save. Yeah the pickups are kind of expensive but they're worth the price. Good pickups with a good amp > shitty pickups with a good amp. You can add all the effects you want but the clean, crisp sound comes from good pickups. I could add all the distortion in the world and my guitar still produces great clean sound if I play chords.

You're missing the point dude, the tone comes completely from the amp, the pickups just help shape it, why do you think the amps have built in distortions and cleans? So that the pickups can build around that and help shape your tone, if it was the other way around, I could have an EMG 81 installed into my LP and have it sound like Zakk Wylde during the No More Tears era, with my shitty 15W combo, why? because he used EMG 81's. But no, his tone came from his overdrive pedal and his old Ampeg amps. Of course having a nice tube amp and nice pickups would be nice, but I'm not sure in Thailand (please excuse me if I'm ignorant here) the concept of simply getting a job and saving up is not as simple as it is in the U.S.A or Canada, if it was, would there be such a high poverty level? No there wouldn't.

I have two guitars, an ESP Dave Mustaine DV8-R with Seymour Duncan pickups and an Ibanez JS1200 with Dimarzio Joe Satriani signature pickups. If I play both guitars on my amp with the exact same settings, the JS1200 sounds much better, more crisp, clean sound with a metal tone. Why is that? Because they're really good quality pickups and even though the Seymour Duncan pickups are good, they're not as good and you can tell from the sound.

OK I dunno where this has gone, browsing through all I can see is shit about berries and wages...

Anyway, in response to some stuff Eric was saying, I don't like to take theory too seriously. I agree it gives you a lot of scope for creativity but sticking to it harshly cramps it too. I write stuff based around keys but add in other weird chords/melodies that are keyless if they sound good. Bands like Lamb Of God and Opeth get really cool stuff out of the Chromatic scale which I like.

At the end of the day it's all about how it sounds and I find it's easier to be more original if I'm fairly loose with theory. However I can see why other players find theory (particularly complex theory) a necessity when writing or whatever. As long as it sounds good, it doesn't matter right?

Oh! so all you've heard is a JSX? the JSX is quite sterile tonewise, and a Marshall Cab? let me guess the 1960B   look, when you've played through a Framus Cobra, a 6505 and a Framus Dragon, Peavey 6505, and a Carvin V3 (I spent a lot of time in GC) then you've heard good tone, the JSX has the Ultra channel off the XXX, which is a half decent amp, but still not a very nice tube amp, so I'll leave it be, if you have a problem with me take it up in PM's...its funny how you've memorized all my lines, I guess you're my biggest fan eh?

You can play guitar for 20 years and still be ignorant, I bet that's gonna be you one day, but yes this argument is over, but not because you declared so, its because you just dont know the mechanics of tone and what makes those tones. Besides anyone can have good tone as long as they have the right gear and know how to EQ, plus an effect or 2 is always useful.

Fuck equipment, just play.

Rocka, basically start out doing them on the 5th fret on the G string. You basically need to have your thumb in a position where it clips the string just after you pick it. A way I find to do this is to sort of flick your right wrist anticlockwise as you play the string, so your thumb is angled towards the string after you have picked.

When I say clip the string just after you pick it, I mean literally JUST after, all one movement. It sounds a little complex but you just need to know the main principle of clipping the string with your thumb slightly. Keep playing around and trying to do them (move up and down the string with your right hand to find a good spot) and you will eventually find a way that works for you.

Have you found a right handed guitar impossible to play? Because left handed guitarists would later regret they started out left handed because they're missing out all the advantages of being a right handed guitarist, example being you have a very limited choice of left hand guitars (from Ibanez atleast, I think they have only 3 left handed models)

But if its really hard for you, yeah, get a left handed one.

As far as amps go, I'm thinking Crates or something. I don't have 3700 smackaroonies to spend.

The quality of their equipment has nothing to do on how well they can play. If EVH had some shit guitar, he would still be as good as he is, see what I mean?

I fail to see how he would be a shitty guitarist if he didn't make his own guitar. Isn't it a thing called skill that matters instead of equipment?

he had a one tone no switch guitar sure he would have the ability to play but he cant without the gear. almost every song requires effects of some sort is all imsaying. if angus young didnt invent the light wire right strings then he could never preform appregios and bends the same way. see what im getting at?

if EVH never had an edit of his fret action than he could never play taps the way he can.

play your guitar and cheezy amp for awhile than go to a guitar center and ask to try out a gibson or fender or otehr high brAND HIGH  priced guitar (over 2000$) ask fo ra marshall MG amp to try it on and just mess witht eh amp a lilthen strum once. you will FEEEL the difference. i started playing electric guitar at 10 (played acoustic since second grade) i had a squier strat and a studio 15r amp froma  starter pack that totaled 300 dollars. then for my 16th birthday my auntie got me a Gibson Flying V and a MArshall MG250dfx tube amp. (i think that was the correct number). i fel the differnece form teh start. now i own over 40 guitar s and 20 amps. (and a drum set ) trust me gear DOES matter. you cant achieve the same sound.

It's great because no matter how hard you try your muscles can't process your thoughts fast enough, so you're constantly playing slow.

Smoke on the water!? That's too damn difficult.

Dude, if you're getting the impression that I suck at guitar, then you're wrong. I've been playing for two years now, do you think I've just been practicing Smoke on the water? And I've been playing "fast" for quite a while now, and I still have yet to get bored of it.

smoke on the water?  play it like this

|----0---3--5--0--3---6---5---3---5--3---0---(0)-

thats an easier and more commonly used way to play the intro. it should take all of five minutes and its fun. if you think smoke ont he water is hard......... just stop playing... especially if its been 2 years,...

Okay does anyone know anything about this guitar: http://www.freetimeweb.nl/home/picture/sub.../epiphone_v.jpg (http://www.freetimeweb.nl/home/picture/sub/gitaar/verzameling/epiphone_v.jpg)

It's an epiphone by gibson from a long time ago...my brother gave it to me to care of, and it's like the one in the picture, except black and with a maple neck. Needs strings replaced and there's something wrong with the pickups I think. But other than that, we don't know much about the guitar. It was left outside his front door like 20 years ago and he just found it there. So if anyone can tell me anything about it, the price or something, anything would be nice.

Okay, so I want to learn more of scales and stuff. Because right now, all I know is how to play g major in 4 positions and the major scale for everything else in the first position (with the low e string root). Also I know how to do that with minor, minor pentatonic, and blues.

My question is though, where the hell do I start? And is there a particular guide or something?

Those patterns are just fundamental scales, they're modes, that's the correct terminology. Just learn those so called "modes" or scales if you will, and you'll know pretty a pretty decent library of music.

I have gone off learning theory quite a lot now, I don't think it's necessarily that important creatively. If you want to compose new stuff just experiment and see what sounds good, I find I can acheive more honest, original music that way.
Title: Guitar(ist) Thread
Post by: Kenny on October 12, 2008, 08:55:13 AM
Simply put:

Modes are exactly like the major scale, they just start and end with a different root note. Different modes give you different feelings, for example the minor scale, or the aeolian mode, gives you a saddish feeling. Try not to limit your music to scales and modes though, try to experiment a bit with chromatism and you might get something good.

I find the most comfortable way to play is with my leg crossed, and with my guitar raised about 60 degrees up, while resting on my leg. I usually end up playing a lot cleaner when sitting like that. It does get quite comfortable sometimes as well, even though I sometimes feel like a pansy sitting like that. Haha.

Haha.

Most of the time I play like that, I also play in front of my computer monitor with a black background and music running so I could jam to it and also see that there's correct finger technique being used. Dont worry a lot of people in latin american sit that way regularly, its become a trend in the U.S to think you're a pansy if you sit that way, but I dont pay attention to it

Ibanez EDGE III's are out of the question, watch out for anything and by anything, I mean NO EXCEPTIONS Ibanez that isn't a Lo-Pro Edge, Original Edge, Edge Pro, or Edge Zero, the ZR Tremolo is also very good. Jackson JT580's and 590's are also pretty nice, the 590 in particular is made by Schaller who used to make the Original Floyd Rose. The JT580's come in mid-range Jacksons and even on some of the higher end ones that aren't U.S.A made. Umm...so here's a rule of thumb, unless its a Prestige Ibanez or a mid-range Jackson, a USA Ernie Ball or anything of more than 500 USD, its pretty much putty and tin foil.

EDIT: by the way, what's your budget, playing style and amp?

I'd get a new amp if I were you, I personally dont like Line 6's anymore as I prefer tube amps, for that type of music you wont really need a Floyd Rose, maybe a decent Strat style bridge for light vibrato would be good.

Unless its Tube or a used Valvestate 8100, mind you 8100, not anything else (This is what Chuck Schuldiner of Death used) then Marshalls are crap.

Well the Marshall tone is defined with the JCM series, which is what every classic rock guitar player uses, the solid state Marshalls don't really have that, its been defined that they have a "bees in a box" type sound, idk man, try it, maybe you'll like it, but I will still stand for tube Marshalls and tube amps in general.

Any Skid Row fans here? I've been practicing I Remember You in and out for the last couple of months, and it's a fun song to play.

JCM800 or 900 is your best bet, but they're not gonna come cheap.
