Title: Media Player
Post by: Psycho on December 23, 2006, 02:50:43 PM
Considering a bunch of things like (quality), (how much space it takes up), (likelyhood of skipping), (versatility), (RAM usage), (user-friendliness), and (availability), tell me what you think is the best Media Player to have, or use (like to watch stunt videos and listen to music...)

and please no one-line answers with no explanation. tell why you think it is the best.

So far, I have: [Winamp] [Windows Media Player] [RealPlayer] [QuickTime/iTunes] and something called [VLC Media Player]

thanks in advance.

so far i like wmp the best. the only one your list i havent used is iTunes because i never found a need for it since i dont have an ipod (yet). Right now im using wmp 11 but it seems like it takes more RAM then 10

EDIT: I forgot about Musicmatch jukebox which doesnt work for me anymore but it doesnt use much ram and it has a very easy interface, lists all the songs even if they arent playing, and it has a cd ripper/burner/mp3 syncher thing, too bad it doesnt work for me anymore

I really love Creative Media Source.

I dont know if you can get it with a creative product, but man it's good.

- Plays anything I throw at it, including my cat (Lol, I mean formats)
- Manages all my music in a nice organized fashion
- Very low RAM usage
- Nice easy interface

For music I use Winamp for the reason "If it's not broke, why fix it?"
As for stunt vids I use Windows Movie Maker to watch all vids. Instead of skipping frames it pauses the vid so it has enough time to load the next frame. The music in high quality vids sounds horrible, but at least I get to watch the vid. High RAM usage, but great for watching vids, can play vids of higher bitrate than WMP and VLC(except for XviD formats where VLC pwns).

I think Itunes is great, easy to use, doesn't take up much space and it's free .

well, right now I use WMP for watching videos and iTunes for music, but I was just curious, since TurtleDick made a big deal out of me switching from RealPlayer(which I notice NOBODY mentioned) to WMP, and my brother and youth leader both say winamp is the best, so I guess I wanted to know what to use, and stick with it, and get rid of everything else... [Can iTunes, Winamp, and WMP play EVERYTHING?] if so, I'll just stick with those. And I'll also try what Aries has.

Yea realplayer.
I once used it but IMO it took too much of my ram so i switched to Winamp.
And yes Winamp can play every MUSIC files. But if you for example dl the DivX plugin winamp can run divx vids too.

BSPlayer is the best for vids imo. You can imagine the reasons... it has all you need while watching a vid and all the options are ordered and clear. It also handles subtitles well.. and I need it since I'm an anime watcher. I'm using WMP too now though.

RealPlayer ain't bad for music.. but I use Winamp. (http://www.audiolaunch.com/players/winamp.gif)

You should just try some and then choose yourself. Some prefer some players and others prefer other ones.

I use wmp for music, I have winamp though. I use media player classic for vids. It came with a codec pack I downloaded and it plays the vids nicely, it plays pretty much all codecs and stuff, it can play music too. I use quicktime for .movs though, cause it's just easier.

Just use WMP. It comes with Windows and will play anything as long as you have the codecs installed, which it will automatically download. Why would you want anything else?  Seriously though, you could get rid of all those players you have and WMP will be more than capable of handling your videos and songs.

@Hiei: I send clips to people all the time. Ask Xtramus

@Everyone who says WMP uses too much RAM: Why can't you spare 32MB-46MB of RAM? And that's just for videos. Playing an MP3 takes up 22MB. It actually used less RAM when I made a playlist and used 18MB instead. I don't see what the problem is with your RAM thing.

I use WMP. I am used to it and it is straightforward, it comes with windows so I dont have to download anything, I have learnt to manage any little quirks or things I dont like about it, and, most importantly, it easilly handles all types of media (or more correctly, all types of media I care about viewing).

Best MP3 player EVER. Almost takes no RAM or space, it's the BEST.

Winamp for music and WMP or VLC for videos. Winamp with the plug-in Enhancer is great for audio. Also I've used winamp as long as I remember, changing would be annoying.

I watched a dvd on my brother's computer yesterday though, but not on VLC. The pc isn't great, so it lagged a bit. Therefore I tried PowerDVD and it worked much better. At my computer VLC works without any problems, but if it did I think PowerDVD would've been something I used more.

I think the best is Windows Media Player 11 and VLC Media Player, if you want to view Quicktime formated videos online then screw Quicktime Player and RealPlayer, go with Quicktime Alternative. It just installs you the codec and a small player .exe instead of an arsenal of .exes which don't do squat.

^I'm actually having trouble adjusting to WMP 11. I like to use the Advanced Tag Editor so I can change any media information if I need to (album, song name, artist) and I can't find that feature in WMP 11

Choose Library from upstairs - choose Now Playing or an open Playlist - right click on the song you want to edit - Advanced Tag Editor
