You could test your 7600gs on another pc to see if the problem is with it.

ps. I hate you for having a better pc than me too... haha

I'm guessing you have anti aliasing on and don't know it or something.

But CS:S Is about the processor, I can get same FPS palying CSS in 640x480 Low model + Texture as in 1440x900 High model + Texture...

A Pentium? Get an AMD now!  Yeah like Simon said, check you haven't got antialiasing turned on, and disable background things you don't need.

Yeah I get around the same fps with 648*480 as 1280*960, all options on low and AA off etc...

Could this be a slow HD issue?

Pentium 4 - 3.00Ghz (2 CPUs)

actually thats 1 CPU with hyper threading, its not even dual core

Make sure there is no Anti alising turned on.
Check if there is anything hogging up your processor and system memory

get some newer drivers from www.nvidia.com instead of the older ones that came off the CD
If there is a wire that is suppose to  be connected into the back of the video card MAKE SURE its plugged in

Check if anything is obstructing the video card fan causing it to hit its throttle temperature.

try running CSS in DirectX 8.1, you will get a major performance gain from that, right click on CSS in steam >properties > Launch options and type
-DXLEVEL 81 and press ok.

PS: my computer is better

Also check that your PSU has 350W or more power otherwise there may not be enough juice getting to your CPU and GFX Card, causing them to work at half or less power. You can pick up 420W psu's for about $50 now but make sure you get a reputable brand otherwise the thing could easily go kaput within a few weeks.

Hey thanks everyone for helping out here.

Yeah my power supply is a recommended 400W, so no problems there.

But I did a 3dmark03 benchmark and the GPU test went smooth, but my CPU test was really really bad which is strange because Ive got a decent CPU. I'll try deactivating hyper-threading and seeing if that goes well. any other ideas?

Get an AMD  Seriously though, what score did you get on your CPU?
Title: CSS
Post by: PlethZorb on December 22, 2006, 03:59:45 AM
i dont remember, but it was so bad and laggy that i stopped it in the middle of the first test...

i read that if you disable hyper threading in BIOS, you'll get better performance for a single application though..

Nope, ran same as before, even worse. I tried overclocking in bios too. Didn't help much.

ok dude, Listen.

on 3d mark CPU tests IT WILL LAGG no matter how nice of a CPU you have. Truest me.

I have a brand new Opteron 165 overclocked from 1.8GHz to 3.0GHz
NOTE that this is a very expencive processor, it is Dual core and when overclocked it is possibly fastest socket 939 processor out on the market.
i get 3 FPS on the 3dmark 06 CPU test, but i also get 180 FPS in CSS.

Also don't mess around with overclocking unless you know kind of what you are doing.

@ bj, please stfu about amd lol, its no better than intel. infact intel currently has the worlds fastest consumer processor.

Dude, do the direct8 thing.

Without it - Game looks a little better, I can't get a steady 40fps (locked on fps_max 40) constantly dropping to around 25-30 during nades and a lot of spraying.

With it - Game looks a little darker (just turn birghtness up) I lock fps @ 50 and it doesn't drop because of nades, I locked @ 60 and it kept dropping to 50, so 50 is fine...and it doesn't drop at all

Just for saying that...

Get an AMD

Seriously though, I hate Intel. Every PC store you go into, Intel. Those god damn TV adverts they have, I hate their logo, the sound in the advert... I remember an old PC... and my Grandad (he's really into PCs) bought me a new AMD processor, which, statistically was 200MHz slower than the Pentium I already had. When we swapped everything ran so much better. So those two reasons coupled together = My hate for Intel

Back on topic, definately try Maxwell's DX method. I did the same with COD2 ages ago, amazing performance compared to DX9.

i agree, intel has an ugly logo

but windows is more Intel ready than AMD ready, you need to install a hotfix to take full advantage of AMD dual core, when it is ready to go for intel dual core.

I think that is kind of stupid, windows should be completely 100% ready for both.

The DirectX8 thing will help but the 7600GS is a Fully ready DirectX 9 card and should not have such a big problem on CSS
It will help though.

thanks again peoples, using -dxlevel 81 only improves the fps by about 2-3. Im gonna go try getting the dust out of all the fans, see if that helps.

Wow lol my pc is 256 ram and 128 mb gfx.. and some other crap.. and mine runs CSS good.. It takes forever to load but once everything gets loaded it runs fine. But this isnt helping you any is it?  Anyways.. does other things work fine? Or does only CSS lag?

My computer is shit, and I can play it with high everything and 4x anti aliasing and get 50fps with dx8.

hmmm, put it back to DX 9 if it only helps by 2-3 FPs, it should be highly noticeable
Title: CSS
Post by: PlethZorb on December 23, 2006, 05:23:48 AM
lol with all settings on full on SA and nvidia control panel, i get about 10 fps on SA. when theyre are peds and cars, for VC/LC/SA, it lags all the way down to 20fps sometimes...

so would this be a CPU issue or a Graphics card issue?

thanks.

Pleth it is possible your windows install is fucked up, i would do a reinstall at this point of at least steam and CSS

if that does not work then i would reinstall windows, your specs tell me it should run CSS
