Title: Spyware.
Post by: Juan on August 14, 2006, 12:17:00 PM
So yeah about two weeks ago some spyware got on my comp, and it messed up my start menu. As you can see i can only log off, since my shutdown button went missing. Also the run feature also went missing and its a timesaver. Anyone have any idea on how to fix it. I could reinstall windows but i would have to back up everything and well i have too many important progs that would be hard to come by again.

Heres a screenie.

I'm not sure how the hell teh spyware did this, it would've have been helpful if you gave us the name of the spyware so we could find some information on it.

To get the Run command back up, right click start, properties, then click the Start Menu tab and look in the scroll down list to Run command, highlight it.

As for the Shut Down button, I'll update this post with some info.

Edit: If you manage to get your Run command back, heres how to fix the Shutdown option problem.

Start > Run > Type "gpedit.msc" and press enter.

Now click User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar

Find the 'Remove and Prevent Access to the Shut Down command' part, right click, select Properties, Disable. Restart windows

Go to your start menu map and put that file back in, ask your friend to give you that file.

if the shutdown button is all your missing, then just do Ctrl + Alt + Delete whenever you want to shut down. If your Shut Down button is deleted from there, then i dont know what

try ctrl+alt+del - new process "cmd" - then type "shutdown -s"

When it isnt there try killing all "svchost" < that will result in a fatal kernel error which is doing the same as above - only adds a error to the system log

dude i dont need to shut down my comp, i need the shutdown icon to reappear on my start menu, i can turn off my comp by logging off and then shutting it off from the log in screen, but it gets tedious.

If you got rid of the spyware maybe you could try this. Not sure if it will put back the turn off comp button but it's worth a try. Ctrl + Alt + Delete, scroll down to explorer.exe, highlight and click end process. You should lose your taskbar at the bottom of windows by doin this. Now go up to the File tab on top, click New Task (run). A create new task window will appear. Type in explorer.exe, click OK. This will restart your taskbar at the bottom of windows. Dunno if this will do it but like I said, it won't hurt.

It may have changed in entry in the registry so this problem could take some research.

Thats the Royale theme for windows professional or media center. Well i tried all the suggestions and none worked so i just reinstalled XP. Ah the smell of fresh grass. My comp actually looks good with no icons on the desktop.   Now i have to dl all those M$ updates. 59 of them to be exact. Plus i have to reinstall all my progs.
