GPU explosion
« on: May 26, 2013, 04:06:35 AM »
I literally heard a loud bang inside my PC, and everything just shut down. After 2 hours of exchanging monitors because mine wasn't responding, asking my dad for his GPU and everything I now got a working piece of PC again. I have to hand over his GPU by tonight so I'd love to see a reply on here before that. My GPU is not repairable me thinks and a clip broke off so I won't even try to reinstall it in my case.

Talking about a case, this is mine(with other parts installed and everything, just an interwebs pic):

It's a Dell Studio XPS case.

I screened all my details with CPU-Z (ignore the GPU as it is my dad's. Might be helpful in some way though because the new card has to fit):

The card that died a terrible death was the ATI Radeon HD 5670. Since that was some time ago I'd rather make a slight upgrade. I got about 150-250€ to spend. Which should be enough to re-buy the card atleast but more is better. Power supply is 350W. All the details of what I bought 4 years ago are here: http://nl.hardware.info/productinfo/95152/dell-studio-xps-8100-core-i5-650-4gb#tab:specificaties  (In Dutch, sorry, but just click the tabs. I only upgraded the RAM from 4GB->6GB.

If I focus on a 1gb card, that fits my current parts (with or without upgrading the PSU) what should I take?

EDIT:// Got my money on this now:

have you ever removed accidentally the heatsink from GPU and started working without it?

350 W is very enough for the whole system by the way.

It may have the heatsink removed or the fan got stuck or stopped somehow.

I hope 350W is enough, got no clue  :P

And the fan still spins. The rest is just broken internally I guess. I am considering the 7850 now but hmm.

go for it but you need atleast a 450W psu to avoid risks.

If the old GPU internally exploded, there is no way to fix, it is totally damaged. Just leave it, it is outdated.
Go either for a 7850 or GTX 660.

Use this: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
to calculate how much power you need for your components.

With the 7850 selected it comes in at 380-400W. So a 450W should be enough although 500W woulden't really hurt. The prices of PSU's are very variable, is there something I should look for? I mean the 450W's go from 17€-60€.

corsair CX 500 is pretty nice for ATX rigs. It costs around 55 euros.

So all in I'd spend around 240€. Fits the budget. I'll wait for some more opinions before I buy something but thanks a lot man  :)

I just measured my case and everything. Turns out the 2gb version of the 7850/7870 will NOT fit. Unless I remove my HDD which is not an option. It's 280mm/101mm. Which is just enormous. And I don't want to buy a card that won't fit.

AAAAAAaand we are back to square one.

If you can afford it, go for the Coolermaster haf xm mid tower, that shit will never disappoint you, and you'll be able to upgrade it with 1000w psu's if needed (they tend to be bigger than your average psu's and won't fit in standard cases), in case you might want to crossfire or stuff like that.

No I just want a good card that fits in my PC. Nothing above 500W is needed here D: Not really an all-out gamer. The most gpu intensive game I own is BF3. Which I ran kind of fine on the now passed away card. Everything on low/medium but I am fine with that. I'd like the make some sort of upgrade though.

Might fit. Newegg has the dimensions for each card so you might wanna check them and get a list of what fits.

Also 350w may be cutting it close for a power supply, infact im 90% sure most 7xxx series cards recommend a minimum of 500w. If I was you I would upgrade the card and PSU, wouldn't be too confident running a 7850 on a Dell prebuilt PSU.

I think gtx 650's & maybe some others come in multiple sizes, just like your 5670. The 2gb won't really make a difference either, I had 570 1.3gb & when I upped it to 670 2gb, I could barely feel the difference in a lot of games, even battlefield ran the same it did with my old card, which is one of the reasons I  went SLI.
