Title: How to make editors love you...
Post by: JL on September 19, 2014, 12:54:05 PM
... cut. your. replays.

This is something everyone needs to know about and it's actually not just for the benefit of the editors, but also for everyone else who likes to look at somebody elses or his own replays.

As i'm busy editing or rather recording footage for the SASL:2013-video, i'm constantly puking in circles because people don't cut their replays and i have to sit through 5-7 attempts of the stunt before i can actually get somewhere. That is, in case i don't miss the actual attempt. How am i supposed to know when the actual stunt is gonna happen, right? People don't even make the effort to conveniently name their replays in a way that would let the editor know that the actual stunt is the 5th attempt in the replay.

It's a huge freaking waste of time for everyone having to sit through all that over and over. Especially editors - i'm sure you guys know what i'm talking about.

But instead of relentlessly moaning, i'll have an attempt at a solution:

Dannye's main.scm (if you don't know what that is you propably live under a rock)
has a replay-cut-feature.

Here's how to use it (properly):

1. Fail your stunt
2. Leave your vehicle
3. Use "Load location 1/2 from foot"
4. Your replay is cut in the moment you use the function

It might be weird or seem like an extra effort at first, but you'll get used to doing that and everyone will profit from. Just remind yourself of the convenience of immediatly seeing everything that is relevant once you load that sweet, perfectly cut replay pressing F3.

And nothing else.

No time wasted. For everyone.

Please pin this and spread the word.

Yea, I knew about the cut replay feature but I don't use Dannye's main anymore.

I'm too oldschool, I use crazytrainer 151 for save/load and a car spawn trainer. I always have actually since the stone age. If it aint broke, don't fix it haha. Sorry to the editors that have to watch my fails first

I always did that, you're not going to find a replay from me with more than the lading

Freeplay + spacebar

So, I can use freeplay to chop my reps?

nah that will fast forward through replays. pressing spacebar will play them back with max. FPS available on your computer or rather skip through the frames as fast as possible.

thats a workaround though, still annoying and not a solution :p

I've never once done anything special and it always only showed it from my load position. I always save positions from inside the vehicle too, so dunno. Though since I started using GTA:VC from steam, it rarely lasts less than 30 seconds, even if i bail out of the vehicle and load, so no idea how I'd go about it. The steam version of VC apparently works differently.

Telling people to use the load on foot function only is not a solution either, personally i can't be bothered do that simply because it's a waste of time and it's way too annoying especially when it comes to stunting with cars.

Besides, stunters spend hours/days/months to land their stunts and some of you editors keep complaing about the extra few minutes you have to put into recording them, come on

Doing remember car also cuts the replay. I see where JL is coming from, I've had some taxi reps go on for 5+ minutes which would be annoying as fuck when trying to edit.

yeah it can really suck on cars, especially with cabbies/taxis or other slow vehicles. i get your point however, but try seeing it from a point of view on which youre supposed to deal with about 220 replays and almost all of them have those extra attempts. that easily adds up to hours of time wasted.

I'm so cool that when my replays contains bails I add the attempt number of the land :ajaja:. I always have cut replays, but yeah, it is kinda bothering... I don't really care anyway :P.

There's no need for any useless tool, just do it the way JL says, that's exactly how I've been doing it since I started stunting.

By the way, Diaz should check out this topic immediately

It's definitely possible to cut replays. You can do so yourself with an hex-editor if you know how. I will see if I can make a simple tool that cuts out a given set of frames from the beginning of the replay. That is, if I have the time.

I don't give a shit about that when I'm stunting. When I'm stunting, I'm stunting. I don't want to waste my time waiting for a taxi to land on the ground before I can get out. Or cars for that matter. If I could just open a program and cut the rep that'd save me time and editor time. How is it a useless tool? If I didn't care about wasting time I wouldn't be using dannyes, which is basically a big time saver.

I figured it was possible, and it would be lovely  :jajaja:

Well there's two versions of Dannyes, I always used the Standard one which doesn't cause those super-long replays ;)

both are the same you moron, the only different thing about them is controller you use, its about getting off vehicle so the replay capture is cut and not playing with gamepad

No, so stop that bullshit already you childish prick.
I see what you did there

Am I offending anyone? No, so stop that bullshit already you childish prick.

I'm just saying that it worked for me, the other version always caused those long replays (at least for me). And every time I used the Standard version, had no probs with it, even on 3 different PCs it worked the same way and none of my replays have more than one attempt - the final one.

That has nothing to do with anything I said :L My replay cuts fine when I load position on foot, but whichever way you look at it, this method will waste time for for someone. Doing it wastes time for stunters, and not doing it wastes time for editors. A replay cutting tool would save time for both sides, which is what I was trying to say.

There's no need for any useless tool
This is what I was responding to. I do not think a replay cutter would be a useless tool.

For me, i would love a replay cutting tool. :ajaja:

Like I said, I don't use dannyes main, so I could use this. Any tool is useful, at least to someone.  :cc_detective:

Wayyy too much effort, specially when you stunt with a car and you cant bail out.
with bikes I dont do it either, but I tend to bail out so the replay cuts itself.

Haters be hating.

If you just make a replay of your first attempt you can just press F3 twice in cars and cabbies each 3 attempts or so. This cuts the replay to the point where F3 was pressed.

I don't even know how to load position in a car. I'm surprised people don't cut their replays for dumb reasons "too much effort" wtf?? It's not just for the respect of editor, but if I had to watch some of my stunts and go through 10 bails before the actuall stunt, I'd puke.
Title: Re: How to make editors love you...
Post by: Blaze on September 21, 2014, 07:06:50 AM
Try and think of this from both sides of the spectrum; obviously when stunting you're going to want to be focused on landing the stunts and not cutting replays which is understandable and when it comes to sending it out you probably wont be concerned as at the end of the day you've put in the hours/days/etc towards getting the stunt(s).  Parallel to that, editing is also a lengthy process which takes time and the longer the reps are the longer the video will take along with increasing the editors frustration; sitting through nine attempts for the landing is not fun, and even more so when you're trying view the stunt, along with recording it/getting multiple angles etc. I'm not saying go out of your way to cut reps every single try, but even if it was every 5 tries or something it'd make editors lives alot easier.

+1 on the replay cutting tool, it'd be great for stunters and editors alike.

Honestly, if you don't have time to record one stunt per minute, you shouldn't bother editing. It's not doing someone a favor to throw it together, it's whoever organized it doing you a favor by letting you having a go at it. If your commitment doesn't go further than sitting through a few bails before recording, I don't see why you'd bother in the first place.

Besides, you're doing a stunt league vid. Normal vids have like what, 20 stunts in them?
Title: Re: How to make editors love you...
Post by: JL on September 21, 2014, 11:45:37 AM
Even with a perfectly cut replay, recording a stunt takes way longer than just 1 minute. 1 minute with an uncut replay is only the time it takes to actually look at the stunt. Roughly. To do a stunt justice, there's a lot more involved than just giving everything a one-shot recording.

You're kinda right though. I couldn't be arsed bothering to edit a video with uncut replays if the overall project isn't "worth it". But after all this isn't about convenience for the editor, but for everyone's sake. I'm just recommending. ;)

If you just make a replay of your first attempt you can just press F3 twice in cars and cabbies each 3 attempts or so. This cuts the replay to the point where F3 was pressed.

That sucks in SA though, because you have to wait for the replay to fade in while the game loads assets. However in VC, it's instant, so it remains a good solution in that game.

It's definitely possible to cut replays. You can do so yourself with an hex-editor if you know how.

This :ajaja:. Still though, I don't think it's a big deal, even with some of the two minute replays out there.

Also dont forget to press F2 after 5-10 seconds when u land a stunt. It's damn annoying when someone press it after 2 sec, it's really shit for the editor :cc_detective:
