SketchUp 2 GTA VC/LC/SA Video Tutorials
By ImPaKt

Here you go, my first video tutorial series. I'll get the rest of the parts rendered and uploaded today.

Videos are 1280x1024 in size, and are very high quality.

You will need (Click names for links to the specific item):

 - SketchUp Pro (http://www.sketchup.com/?section=downloads) (Needed for exporting the .3ds file of a model, link is the trial version)
 - 3DS Max 9 (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5972446) (30 day trial, registration required by following link half way down the page)
 - KAMs 3DS Max Scripts (http://gtanet.com/kam/KAMS_Max.rar) (For importing/exporting DFF, COL etc in 3DS Max
 - TXD Workshop (http://www.thegtaplace.com/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=722)
 - G-TXD (http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=2078) (For creating and editing TXD files. Generates compressed files, good for large mods)
 - Coll Editor II (http://www.steve-m.com/downloads/tools/colleditor2/)
 - Moo Mapper (http://www.chronetal.co.uk/gta/) (If mapping for VC/LC)
 - mED (http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=1053) (If mapping GTA SA)

----------------------------------------

Part 1 - Modelling

Shows how to model a simple house in
SketchUp includng 4 walls, floor, roof,
door and chimney.

Duration: 4:29
Size: 7mb

Downloads:
SendSpace (http://www.sendspace.com/file/7vgl65)

Youtube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=1Km5rUPyuoc)

----------------------------------------

Part 2 - Scaling

Learn how to scale your model using another
model as a reference. Scaling is important else
you end up with models that are 10 times
bigger than everything else

Duration: 4:33
Size: 9.5mb

Required Files:
GTA VC Coach .3ds File (http://www.sendspace.com/file/zjti11)
Downloads:
SendSpace (http://www.sendspace.com/file/7wuxe5)
FileFront (http://files.filefront.com/Part+2+++Scalingwmv/;7801610;;/fileinfo.html)
Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkqmRMnharg)

----------------------------------------

Part 3 - Texturing

Teaching how to texture your house with
default materials, and importing custom
ones. Larger size as textures gave
the video a lot more detail.

NOTE: Make sure that any textures used on
your model are sized by multiples of 2.
Such as: 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, 256x256,
512x512 and so on. A size of 123x456
or any other mis-sized image would crash GTA.

Size: 22mb

Part 4 - Exporting and Finalising Model

this tutorial. You can pick up a 30 day
trial at www.autodesk.com

Part 5 - Creating the COL File

How to create the .col that will be used
with your .dff file in GTA.

Duration: 1:12
Size: 3mb

Downloads:

FileFront (http://files.filefront.com/Part+5+++COL+Exportwmv/;7802966;;/fileinfo.html)

----------------------------------------

Part 6 - Creating the TXD File

How to put your textures into a .txd file
for use in GTA.

NOTE: Personally I would use G-TXD
for the texture editing. It is a lot easier to
use and TXD Workshop is not very stable
at creating new TXDs and can sometimes
corrupt them. G-TXD can be found at the
top of the page. Make sure to use DXT1
compression with G-TXD as a 2mb TXD can
be compressed to under 400kb

Duration: 1:16
Size: 1.5mb

Part 7 - Getting Everything In-Game

Putting the .dff, .txd and .col into GTA
using Moo Mapper.

Size: 23mb

Check back, I'll update the details on the other videos as they are uploaded.

These tutorials are for Sketchup 2 VC/LC. In the videos i give hints when needed on how you can do it for SA. If you still need help, feel free to ask me by PM, here or on MSN @ [email protected]

Happy Mapping!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guys, I'd love to see what you guys can come up with, so follow the tutorials, make your own content and POST SOME PICS!

Thanks all.

No problem guys, Part 2 is now uploading.

I'm surprised that a 4 minute 1280x1024 video was only 7mb

Must be all the white background in sketchup

The moo tut's gonna be huge if this is the case.

EDIT: Thanks Aries for the pin.

EDIT 2: There was a problem uploading... GAHH!

No AtomiK, the game seems to treat models as LOD's for us. They dissapear when close. Storm managed to get his working, I really dont have a clue as people who saw this tut over at GTAF had no troubles. So try asking over there in the thread i made.

isnt one of the objects in the dff named x and the other one x_lod or something? also Steves RWAnalyze can tag single meshes as "LOD" (Level of Detail Stream)

Post by: ImPaKt on June 23, 2007, 03:58:24 PM
No Fox, for some reason i added a model named 'TUTHOUSE' to an ipl/ide called 'TUTORIAL' and it treats it as an LOD. I have no idea why and Torekk has the same trouble.

I've asked already on GTAForums.com, but I'll try later today if I got the same problem in SA.

ATTENTION:

Make sure when making something in SketchUp that all the textures you use have names of 7 letters or less. When they get imported to 3ds they get shortened and no longer match the original image files that get put in the txd. This is a common cause of the white model bug.

If you have a textrue called material_a.jpg

Try shortening it to mtrl_a.jpg then applying it to the model in sketchup and continuing from there. It should work, this is what solved Storm's penis model being white (LOL, Stormies white penis)

Hope this helps.

ImPaKt,

You may wanna add that when building, if the model is blue before texturning it, It doesent appear ingame. To fix it right click the moel and click the invert or somethin, It turns the model white.

EDIT: I don't need it anymore, but you could still re-upload it ;P
Anyway, anyone know how to fix the problem of the model disappearing when you go near it?

They were deleted by FileFront, not Impakt.

The tuts weren't all that helpful anyway *sorry Impy but you know it's true :P*

just download a trial of 3ds max and google "3ds max box modeling tutorial" to get the hang of modeling then go to gtaf then III era modding and look for some tutorials there.

I would like it as well, if anyone still has them. I tried it a few times years ago but my game crashed as soon as I touched the house I made. Was thinking of trying it again because I got defeated  :cc_detective:

Try GTAForums?

http://gtaforums.com/topic/547591-how-to-make-your-own-gta-sa-city-using-sketchup/ (http://gtaforums.com/topic/547591-how-to-make-your-own-gta-sa-city-using-sketchup/)

That's for SA but I'd assume VC works the same except you'd export it for VC in KAM's DFF tools.

Okay now I'm extremely close to smashing my dick with an axe handle. I've followed this tutorial to the word, failed. Retextured the model in Zmod, the model now appears textured in MooMapper, still failed. Removed any text reference to the COL file, STILL failed just at a different spot on the loading bar. Rainbow please tell me you aren't having the same trouble.

E: Just opened the .dff in Zmod2, this message appears -

E2: Started from scratch simply using a box, it works in Zmodeler and Moo Mapper AND MEd, COL file works in Coll Editor, but still the same errors occur.

Oh lawd a badass bike! Ossim!

And no I do not have the same problem, the only problem I ever had was that when I touched the house I made in-game, the game crashed. I never used Zmod though, just 3DSMax and Moo mapper. EDIT:// and sketchup obviously.
