Blog / Blast From The Past: Quattro
« on: February 24, 2011, 05:43:27 AM »
This week's blast from the past was selected and written by NuclearDeath.

Released in 2005, Quattro is the first video that comes to my mind when I think about a GTAS classic. Made by Samurai, Kaneda, Aries and Omni, this four man collab represents pretty well how stunting was back then when un-modded sections still had something to offer. As if, for one and only video, they were a crew. Quattro reminds you that you don't need to be 20 random guys who don't know each other and who land only one stunt each, then ask some random editor to do a cool stunting video.

In this kind of video, what really matters in not how great the stunts are but how well they get together. Of course, to make a video that can hold the distance you need a few standouts. In this case the co-best stunters of the year award winners manage to pull them off perfectly. Indeed, 2005 was the most active year stuntingwise for Kaneda and Samurai, both made some of the best vice city ever this  year, they were at their top. (Btw, the notable stunts in this video are obvious, no need to point them out.)

Samurai's editing science is key here. The guy knew exactly how to catch viewer's attention without burning their eyes, he wasn't the kind of editor who throw one thousand of different effect. He would just pick songs that feat his editing style perfectly, putting each stunts are at the right place with the good angle to give them the credit they deserve. It seems like he tried to do re-create the same atmosphere with Lagoon, trying to make the viewer feel like if he was in-game instead of giving the impression of watching a Hollywood superproductions.

This video didn't redefined stunting but it's a perfect example of how a stunting video perfectly get together.

This was written by Kaneda, not by me.

Also, Anarchy was released in mid-2004. I think.

This week's blast from the past was dug up and resuscitated by Kaneda.

Much like fine wine, good furniture and MILFs – mike & Liquid Snake's Anarchy just gets better with age. Many moons ago when I inadvertently stumbled across VC stunting, the second vid I watched was Anarchy, and it left me literally speechless. This vid, more than any other I watched in that stunt frenzied weekend, inspired me to look at VC in a totally different way. It is 14 minutes and 38 seconds of sheer, unadulterated, orgasmic goodness.

While your jaw may drop to a 180ft p2b and your breast may quicken to a perfectly executed CSM2Roof - keep in mind that vids like Anarchy paved the way for all that followed. Mike is, and always has been, one of the grandfathers of modern stunting. And while he loves to stir the pot occasionally and ruffle a few hitherto unruffled feathers, respect for him as a stunter and a pioneer cannot – nay, SHALL NOT – be denied.

Enjoy Anarchy.

It doesn't mean stunting isn't as good anymore - it just means it's moved on without us. Standards are still high, and VC is still popularly being used. I'm happy with that.

Words of wisdom.

Blog / Blast From The Past: Spiengraph
« on: January 28, 2011, 06:08:23 AM »
This week's blast from the past was selected and written by Sweet.

Haywire had never been one to set the stunting world on fire, and that's fine; not everyone is a Daffy or a Kr3mlin or a Kert. But when he released Spiengraph in late 2007, Haywire showed us what he could really do. It was pretty much his last proper solo, 404 was half a solo and so doesn’t count.

The one thing that this vid has that it needs to be commended for was variety. This was back in the time when not many people were doing different types of stunts. Haywire had grabs, high flying PB's, high flying GRINDS. He had it all. He over-whored the CSM's a fair bit, but this was back when the CSM was quite new and not many people were catching on, and he did some great ones that would still be considered amazing today. He also made them look stylish, with most of them involving some type of spin or flip.

The editing also has a certain style to it that not many videos have: Haywire's editing style jumped off from this one, let's say. He edited the sky colors for black to suit the style of the video, and while he did the same idea much better in later vids, it was still a very novel concept that not many people use to date.

Lol people, why are you getting so hyped up? That's just warow's opinion on these subjects. It's your choice to value them or not, no one's forcing you.

@ merrix, I'm not saying you have no idea what you're talking about but... two takes it is by far not the best video of '10 stunting-wise.

That's, like, my opinion man.

The square brackets are to indicate where I've made a change to the dialogue. So for example, for the word unconscious, WaRoW originally wrote in French, inconscient. I guess I didn't need the brackets...
