Gaming Discussion / Re: GTA V Trailer 2
« on: November 14, 2012, 12:29:30 PM »
Okay, THAT trailer makes me a lot more confident about the game. It's not necessarily the graphics or the environment (although they're both cool as shit), it's the characterisations. The protagonists and NPCs seem more interesting than in IV - not that I hated Niko, but most of the other characters were sub-par. This time we have cultural and generational gaps that look as though they'll provide a lot of depth and some laughs (something sorely lacking from IV). As KJ said too, it's more action movie-like and not so 'gritty realism' kinda thing - like the original SA, swinging on boat masts, jumping off crashing trains, etc. This is what I like to see in an action game.

"Bounce? We're bouncing now?" - awesome stuff.

I just wanted to let you know guys that "The Myth Busters" are working on a special episode all about "Breaking Bad". Vince Gilligan and Aaron Paul will also be in the show. It will probably come really soon.

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/11/02/mythbusters-breaking-bad-episode/

That's cool as shit. I'd like to see them do another where they test two other things:

- when the RV's battery runs flat and they have to start it using nickel and acid to prime the battery

- when Walter uses thermite from a bunch of Etch-A-Sketch's to burn through a lock

Movies/TV / Re: Dexter Season 7
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:57:33 PM »
I just wanted to rekindle this thread, as I've only recently been catching up on Season 7 (the Misses and I got swept up in Sopranos for a spell). When I watched the season opener, I thought it was an adequate opening to a Dexter season, but as I've been catching up I've gradually become more and more disappointed. Now I actually tend to agree with draguN's initial opinion that the writing is getting lazy - it is. So far season 7 is coming across as a poorly written thriller that doesn't seem to have any real idea where it's headed. The things that have just had me rubbing my head so far are these:

- Why didn't Deb arrest him immediately? I'm guessing this is why they established her having 'feelings' for him at the tail end of the sixth season, but it still doesn't make much sense. Akin to this question: why have Dexter spin some bullshit story about killing Travis if it wasn't gonna matter one episode later - he admits to Deb that he's a serial killer. It just makes the entire opening episode seem like filler.

- Why did Masuka's apprentice (or whatever, can't recall his name) die so abruptly? A good deal of time was spent in the sixth season establishing this character as a potential threat to Dexter, only to have his character completely change in the seventh season and then bump him off incredibly casually. It strikes me as a situation where the actor couldn't continue in the role (for whatever reason), and the writers had to quickly compensate - I don't know how many here remember the debacle of Michelle Rodriguez's character on Lost.

- Why hasn't Deb asked whether or not Dexter killed Dokes (sp?) ? She's established that he was the Bay Harbour Butcher, but hasn't mentioned Dokes to him at all - only to Laguerda (sp?). It just seems odd that she wouldn't make that connection.

- Would you really shoot yourself because a crime boss promised to take care of your family if you did? You could argue he figured they would kill him anyway, but the entire scene just didn't ring true. What was to stop the guy from shooting all three of them right there - he was the only one with a gun in his hand. This one's a minor complaint, but with all the major flaws now, even the small ones are standing out.

- Why, in the name of fuck, would Dexter go to visit this crime boss in prison? Not only that, but he talks to him - in an incriminating fashion. Police record those conversations - Dexter would have to know this. Taking six years to establish Dexter as someone incredibly careful not to get caught - having him do this just makes him look like a dumbass who should have been caught decades ago.

The writing so far is - as draguN suggested - just plain lazy. So far the season has just ambled here and there and not really given us anything meaty to sink our teeth into. I'm assuming it will culminate with Deb being killed, cancelling out the problem of her constantly being at odds with Dexter's true identity. Again I argue that the show should have ended with the current season and wrap it up all up nicely. Now, alas, it seems like the show will just slide slowly into mediocrity and be remembered for that.

I liked how Liberty City felt alive but I hope this is not the only thing that's getting detail. Pretty interesting read :)

See, I didn't get that from IV. It felt like The Truman Show. I'm always disappointed when I play a GTA game and I see clothing stores open at 3am - it doesn't feel right. I'm hoping that they take a leaf out of Red Dead's book and have stores close at night, and streets appear less active - that did feel right.

While I'm not a fan of the idea of being able to play 3 protagonists (I don't know how that's supposed to accommodate immersion), I have always wanted R* to do something to change up the aging GTA formula - and I guess this, technically constitutes a change. But it feels a little lazy. How can we change the game? An entirely new city? No. Making it a game where you're on the right side of the law? No. How about taking it back to the 70s? No.

Ah, screw it. Just give the player 3 protagonists.

I don't wanna be too cynical until I've played the game though. I like the idea of mini-games and side-missions - something sorely lacking in GTA IV. I'm hoping that the other R3 missions are also back (Paramedic, Firefighter and Taxi), because I find them strangely engaging. Also it's good to see a wide variety of transport - I do like fucking around with bicycles.

Just a supplemental rant: if the game is going to insist of having hidden pickups, then at least reward us this time with something other than a fucking achievement checked off the list. How about going back to the days of giving us weapons at our base, or maybe a couple of cool, one-off vehicles to play around in. Anything for taking the time (and these days, even with a guide, it's a substantial amount of time) to find all your hidden packages (or pigeons, or whatever). I don't give two fucks about getting Gamer Points.

It seems odd that you would be able to switch characters whenever you wanted (I'm assuming outside of a mission) - how would that work with the game's mission structure? I don't know if I doubt the information above, but that one point just sticks out like a sore thumb. Does each character have their own story? Do they ever cross paths? Why was only one protagonist hinted at in the teaser?

Once again, the official launch trailer should (note: SHOULD) answer a lot of those questions. I just can't help but think Rockstar would be aware that the simplicity of the game is one of the reasons it became so popular.

VC Un-Modded Stunting Video Releases / Re: Science

In my experience the game can behave unpredictably, and you can try a stunt 1,000 times and get 90ft, then one attempt will get you 130ft for whatever reason. And naturally that'll be the one attempt you'll save a replay of, in the hope that you can determine what you did differently from the other 1,000 attempts. Besides the fact, why would someone show modded bails?

Some loverly spots. I missed that Freeway one in Los Santos - sweet spot.

It's a bit lame, sure. But the character's kills are almost always the same - a knife to the heart. Knowing that, I can forgive them for at least changing up the locations of the kills, even something as improbable as an airport. My concern with the new season is that it should be show's last. There's been no indication that it isn't the last season, but typically the final season of a popular TV show will make a point of saying so. I love the show, but can't help but feel it's run its course, and Dexter should be caught. Instead of that, what it feels as though will happen is Masuka's understudy will kill Deb and that'll be the end of that conflict.

I'm hoping it doesn't go that way, but I'd be willing to bet it does.

ATS Themed Video Releases / Re: History of ATS pt5

Awesome. You managed to take what was a fairly half-assed ramble-a-thon and crop it down to make it interesting. Good choice of location too. I remember that being one of the points of contention when we started recording the audio - where to have it play out. And you finally got to use your train!

Thanks for takin the time to finish that up, dude. It's the capper for the crew as a whole.

One thing - we get off the train together, and the track playing throughout the vid is called 'Love on a Real Train'? Creepy much?

P.S. One of your grabs of Sam's The Final Cut easter eggs was new to me. STILL finding them!

VC Un-Modded Stunting Video Releases / Re: Crankshaft 2
« on: September 24, 2012, 05:51:35 PM »
I enjoyed this one a lot. Very creative use of otherwise useless terrain. Sometimes it takes a car to do a bike's job. The editing was nice and relaxed, which suits car stunts better in my opinion. My only teeny tiny problem was the song, which I thought just didn't get things going. It's wierd, because it seems like it should've worked (and probably did for others watching), but I just found it hard to marry to the stunts.

Apart from that, excellent work from everyone involved.

If, on the second one, you're talking about landing the precision on that upright section (the crosshatching metalwork thingo), I think you'll find the top of that isn't clipped so you'll fall right through. The same crane thing on the far right of that one has that upper section clipped though (don't ask me why one is and one isn't).

The boat one looks promising.

Movies/TV / Re: What was the last movie you've watched?
« on: September 20, 2012, 02:46:13 PM »

After initially being disappointed, the movie has grown on me after subsequent viewings. It's an incredible example of a movie that's made well. The direction is great, the editing is fantastic and the look of the movie is flawless. Ignore the nay-sayers and armchair critics and give it a watch. Purely as an execution it's near perfect.

7.5/10.

GTA Modding / Re: How to create an actor in Vice City - Vice Builder v1.3 ?
« on: September 16, 2012, 12:48:25 AM »
Did the actor spawn at all? Or just not in the location you specified?

Try spawning your actor sooner in the script - like this:

Code: [Select]
:Label008725
0001: wait  1000 ms
0247: request_model #BKA
00D6: if  0
8248:   NOT   model #BKA available
004D: jump_if_false ££Label008749
0001: wait  1000 ms
0002: jump ££Label008725

:Label008749
009A: $7 = create_actor  4 #BKA at -606.7478 -332.5978  11.28901
038B: load_requested_models
0001: wait  1000 ms
0002: jump ££Label008757

:Label008757
0002: jump ££Label00875E

Sometimes it can be easier to seperate your threads a little. One set for your actor, another for your camera, etc. You have to kind of time it out in regards to your wait states, but having them as separate threads can make it easier to find where mistakes in the codes are.

create_thread ££actor
create_thread ££camera

Like that. You can also skip threads by simply commenting the create_thread opcodes out, rather than having to comment everything in the thread out.

^ Agreed.

The apparent need for replay checkers just strikes me as overkill. As does voting for the song to be used. These are things you place in the editor's hands. If you're confident with your choice of editor, you should be equally confident about his choices.

Oh, and hey UL.

...some of the newer members have a lower standard/skill level, thus something that's hard for them and which they put a lot of effort in may seem like a shitty stunt to others. I think we should still give those people a spot in the video.

What he said. The idea that Community vids can only comprise the best of the best is what turned me off contributing to them. Everyone here contributes to this community staying afloat, they should be entitled to a spot in the community vid - regardless of their stunt (naturally there should at least be some effort made - a simple krail off a ramp may be stretching it). I don't see a major problem with old stunts either. Sure, it'd be nice if they were all new, but it can be tough to get new stuff and the temptation to earmark those for a crew vid is tough to overcome.

Beggers can't really be choosers these days. And the viewership is primarily stunters in the community, and seeing your own stunt in a community vid is always a thrill, even if it doesn't stack up against the more impressive stunts in the vid. Focus on community and not some misguided idea that it needs to be uber-spectacular, and I think the process will be quicker, easier and more enjoyable for everyone here.

Well they wouldn't limit themselves to a PC only release (I know you didn't say that) so there's little doubt it will be an Xbox720/PS4 release. They'll need to really pull something special out of the bag for this one, because FF titles have been waning both in popularity and suitable execution. I think they need to drop the emo element, which has been way too strong lately, in their FF releases and get back to more macho heroism like in VI.
