It's been a while...

You can check the full-res version on deviantART: http://firefly2347.deviantart.com/#/d3ft5ev

Painted in Photoshop CS3, default brushes, no photographs or 3D used. Took around eight hours I guess.

Thoughts?

I like a lot of the bebop and cool/modal/free jazz from the 50s to 60s era, stuff like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson etc. Lately though, I've been more into modern jazz by bands like Polar Bear, Fulborn Teversham, Acoustic Ladyland and Led Bib as well as a bunch of solo musicians whose names I can't remember.

I like all sorts of instrumentation in my jazz. Sometimes I'll want to listen to some upbeat piano jazz or free trumpet/saxophone improvisation, other times nothing beats the mood of bass-heavy jazz. In modern avant-garde jazz, even electronics can be used quite effectively.

Alright, here are some wireframe and untextured shots:

The leather strap was an afterthought, I spent very little time on it - as a result, the mesh is pretty glitchy and messy.

A closer look at the actual watch mesh. As you can see, my use of polygons is excessive to say the least

This is just to illustrate how the movement fits into the case.

An alternative version of the watch, black face with white and silver markings.

And I may sound like a total idiot, but I never thought the wheel in the far left could be rotating so fast. lol
The balance wheel, it's called. It's not actually rotating, it's oscillating back and forth. But you're right, it does move faster than in most watches - my design uses a 36000BPH escapement, which means the balance wheel moves back and forth 10 times per second. Such a fast mechanism is a rarity in real watches because it's a pain to build and maintain (a lot of wear), but it keeps very accurate time.

You just took pictures of your own watch you bastard :P
Heh, I wish - I'm nowhere near rich enough to be able to afford an IWC watch.

Thanks again for the comments everyone

Do you have any W.I.P shots?
I don't, but I could do some untextured/wireframe renders if you'd like to have a closer look at the mesh.
do u do this just for fun?
Yeah, I do all my artwork for fun. Also, I've always wanted to know how mechanical watches and clocks work, and I figured the best way to learn would be to make one myself.
Made any new pictures recently?
Nothing worth showing, apart from this watch. I've been pretty busy with final exams and such recently. I just got accepted into university today though, so now I have nothing but free time for a few months.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I made a model of a watch, including its movement. It's my own design, though I took a lot of ideas for the case and dials from IWC watches.

Render with casing removed:

Movement, top view:

Movement from the bottom:

Just the moving bits of the movement:

Video:
Watch movement animation
The animation isn't keyframed, i.e. the gear train is actually functional and is driven by the main wheel. Each cog and pinion does something and has the correct amount of teeth, the ratios of their radii are accurate etc. It's my own design - by no means a particularly efficient one, but it is a functional movement (or rather a simulation thereof). I may post some more videos of it on my Youtube channel later on.

What do you think?

Cinema 4D. Here's another render, just the bottle without the contents.

Thanks :)
