From the demos I've seen the new start menu looks really childish and like its trying to emulate a phone os in a really insulting way. For tablets that might be ok, but for a desktop that just looks stupid. Guess we'll see..

Yeah I first thought it was for tablets only. I do like their take on the "new" taskmanager design:

The more ressources a program uses, the darker becomes it's background. Also it's new performance tab really looks nice to me:

Fuck, if I hadn't format my PC a day before I found this, I would've installed it.

Because Win 7 is the only OS that supports Trim for SSDs

Imagine, if you will, that you have a stack of blank papers on your desk at work. Each workday you keep the papers with important information on them, but get rid of the unnecessary papers, like the one you doodled on during a boring meeting, by putting them in the "To Be Recycled" tray on your desk. It's not worth going all the way down to the recycling center for a few sheets of paper, so you wait until you have a stack that is worth the travel time.

Eventually, you run out of blank paper. Since you have a project due that day, it is now time to use the paper from the "To Be Recycled" tray. You take out your eraser and get to work. Erasing takes a lot of effort, so you decide to only clean up a portion of the stack to tide you over for a while. Eventually you will run out of paper again and you'll have to erase another portion, but you plan on crossing that bridge when you come to it.

That is why solid-state drives slow down while writing after prolonged use. They have to clean the files marked for deletion before they can be written on, and erasing takes time. This can cause serious delays, depending on how much data you're trying to save and how much needs to be deleted. Luckily, TRIM alleviates this problem and is supported on many of the SSDs and operating systems made today (that being Windows 7, and the newer Mac OS's, etc)

^Quote from some random page. Explains it perfectly, I think.

And if you don't know what an SSD is, it's short for Solid-State Drive, which are currently up to 10-20 times faster than traditional harddrives. While harddrives have insanely fast spinning discs, SSDs use NAND flash memory, which is like I said, faster, and it's also completely quiet.

If you install Vista, XP or anything lower on an SSD, you will experience slow-downs after a short while.

The thing I really like about SSDs it that I now boot Windows in 10-15 seconds, whereas on my old 7200RPM harddrive, I would boot at 45-60 seconds. It also loads other applications much faster as well.

I have a feeling that functionally won't be used much at all. Games for Windows Live had that ability too but was only used in two games IIRC (Shadowrun comes to mind) before it was retired and games that supported it are no longer able to play with 360 gamers due to the lack of updates to keep G4WL and Xbox Live in sync.
