Looking Back #5 - Retrovision
« on: May 21, 2011, 02:22:34 PM »
On the 5th episode of Looking Back, we will be looking back at a rare gem amongst a huge variety of collabs circa 2009: Retrovision.

Retrovision's topic could pose a small doubt for the viewer. The description is very brief, and the only words that stand out are 'leftover collab'. Leftover collabs were a usual thing those days even, and as today, most of them were made by people who didn't really understand the word and thought of it as a place to throw off crappy stunts. Well, rest assured, this video sure is a leftover collab. A large portion of stunts really were leftovers, combined with a few oldies. However, unlike 99% of leftover collabs, this one had a really good mix stuntwise. To a objective viewer it would easily seem like a regular collab, very good even, stunt-wise.

The line-up is great, there's no doubt about that. And there are certainly stunts that can be singled out as the best here. For me those would be all of Daffy's stunts (which have been previously used in SASL), and the finisher also had some sort of a great feel to it. But, every single stunt worked great and contributed to the video, which could be easily attributed to the amazing feel created by the editing. More about that in the next paragraph.

Morbidxxx was always known around GTAS as a great editor, who knew how to put the right effect at just the right moment, never getting too excessive with unneeded stuff. This video is a perfect example of his style. There isn't an abundance of effects, yet again the feeling you can't get in most overedited videos shows up here. The effects appear right where you want them to, and nowhere else. Perfect utilization of the music used (which might be disliked by some, but I love Portishead personally), with every effect staying true to its purpose and not being flashy, was what made this video stand out editing-wise. Another amazing aspect of the editing are the camera angles, which were truly great, and by that I mean mostly the freeplay work. All of the stuck angles are great and somehow help out the feeling (just to note a few examples I'll mention the epic spinning VROCK sign at Dani0's taxi stunt, the transition between Dani0's and Daffy's stunt at the same point, and the great first person blimps over a nice side view, at my stunt).

This video has been nominated for the best collaboration of 2009. It won no votes, but just by appearing there it showed how, regardless of the purpose of the video: real, leftover, or even time-limited, if enough effort and heart is taken into a video, it's going to produce results. I congratulate morbid once again for this masterpiece and I'm really happy that I got a chance to participate.

You know what to do: sit back and enjoy Retrovision.

Who won the award that year ? I wasn't around in 09

EDIT : Can't believe I missed it, the finisher was insane and so was the rest. Atmosphere a bit to depressing maybe but still great.

Whoah, how come I've never seen this? Such an amazing video, how dare one call this leftover? Daffy absolutely killed it, never knew he, or anyone for that matter, landed the bump 2 ferris wheel. The editing was really good as well indeed, high quality stuff here. Thanks for sharing. :)
