Title: GTA IV Opinions
Post by: kaneda on April 28, 2008, 10:30:12 PM
Well I got my copy of GTA IV this morning, and came home for a break from work to give it a whirl (just to note, I was already coming home...I didn't come home just so I could play  ). So far, I do like what I see. I don't wanna make this too spoilerish, so I'll just note down some positives and negatives I've found thus far:

+ New wanted system, which I think is a great deviation from the norm
+ Cars are much less forgiving when it comes to slamming down the handbrake. You really have to drive a bit more carefully this time out
+ TV - I'm sure the novelty will wear off, but it's kinda groovy and gives ya a good laugh
+ Player customization is back for IV, which was one of the best things about SA
+ The city looks absolutely fantastic. Incredible detail, lovely lighting effects and a much better atmosphere than previous GTA games
+ The phone system is a nice touch. It gives you some insight into what a mission may have in store before you commit to doing it

- Player control is a little difficult every now and then. Of course I don't know yet if any RPG type element will give your player increased agility, so...
- Having to continually tap the run button to sprint is a little annoying, in my opinion. This was a sour note for me in SA too
- Missions so far haven't really been that imaginative (although, I haven't done too many)

I encourage everyone to give their own five cents worth in this thread. My overall opinion so far is that I'm more than pleased with GTAIV. Certainly it looks spectacular in terms of aesthetics, but I couldn't give an absolutely honest opinion of gameplay this early.

As for stunting...well I'm not even remotely interested in testing that out right now. I'll take the time to enjoy the game

So far I've only seen vids/trailers/screens, and just by looking at them I can already say that it looks absolutely stunning. I could simply drive through the streets hour on end, just soaking in the city life.

i pretty much have the exact same opinion as you kan lol.. sept im a lil further in the missions.. im up to some difficult ones and i think they're alot harder cause i turned aim assist off cause i don't like it .. also i think i know how to get people in the trunks.. but im still working on that

ohh and im a lil disappointed with the bike handling :.. tho i haven't tried a backflip yet lol

I don't know about any LC Smackdown II (yep, I've decided to go with that as a title ). I'm still highly doubtful about a PC release of GTA IV.

However...it would be nice

So far, it is ok. I haven't tried many stunts because I'm trying to get used to the controls, remember this is my first time playing the 360. I'm slowly getting into the groove a bit, nearly fucked up 'First Date' when I hit a bump and got stuck on my side but somehow got myself righted again (very different controls). I did a barrel roll actually, unintentional but looked sweet! Roman freaked lol.

There has been occassional pop-up but other than that, I'm golden.

Games amazing. I've been playing round my mates. I think everything works really well. Oh and stunting is awesome. I dis some on the Sanchez and freeway. Bumping is solid as ever, more like SA though than VC. I also busted a bump 2 grind. The attention to detail is incredible.

Bought a copy this morning and luckily have the day off    So far I've just been running around to see how things handle. The graphics and attention to detail is mind blowing. I've ridin a few bikes but have only done a few basic things with them so far. It's gonna take awhile for me to get used to a joypad again. So far I love it. I'll probably start the missions tonight after some more running around. Oh and guess the first place I went into? The Triangle Club   got me a lap dance.

It seems to me that stunting is still here, but one of the main reasons i dont play to much with my box (approx 50 hours during 2 year) is the controller.

Will it be a big suckage to stunt with a joy for an orthodox keyboard user?

In addition to my list at the header of this thread:

+ Autosave (a feature on the XB360, don't know about PS3). It's handy and gives the game a good flow...not having to hike back to your safehouse every time you wanna save
+ The mission structure adds to the continuous flow of the game too. Having missions start from wherever you happen to be on the map makes it less repetitive
+ Collisions - both car/car and car/ped...they just look and sound so...ouch
+ The sat-nav system is great

- Flying out through your windscreen if you hit something in a car at high speed. It's a cool little feature, but will definitely become a nuisance
- Map markers are way too small and difficult to make out. I'm old...and my vision is failing, you see

Oh, I haven't realised that. I noticed it autosaved after missions, but I thought that was only for stats and stuff. Thanks for telling, that's great!
Title: GTA IV Opinions
Post by: Kingjad on April 29, 2008, 03:46:59 PM
I too never knew it was a proper autosave, thought it was just for stats. Big relief, I've been getting taxis back to my safehouse like a dumb bastard.
Title: GTA IV Opinions
Post by: kaneda on April 29, 2008, 04:07:32 PM
Well I'm assuming it saves the game as a safehouse does. I usually tend to do a safehouse save before shutting off for the day anyway, so I don't really know for certain. Considering you can disable the feature, I'd say it's nothing to do with stats (otherwise it'd be saving every time you did something that would be attributed to stats, which if you look...is an awfully long list).

Is it just me who felt like the city was very tight, as in seemed like the buildings were a lot closer together than in GTA III.
GTA IV felt almost a little claustrophobic compared to the LC from GTA III, i guess it's more realistic this way but it's gonna take some time getting used to me i think.
Also i didn't see many rails, not by far as many as in LC/VC/SA... does anyone have a video of someone who's able to grind like we're used to do it?

As for the game itself, i guess i wasted the day running around getting chased by cops and crashing in to all sorta stuff so i have to give you my opinion tomorrow

When I first hit somebody with the car I freaked! There was actually blood on the hood! GOTY for sure.

The ragdolls is hilarious. The first time I got myself a bike I hit this curb, hit the back of a car, flew off and into a tree which broke my back and I died. It was INSANE. I'm going to be up until 3:00 in the morning just playing, though I wish all the islands were unlocked from the start =\

Uncle Vlad mission, I think it's called, anyways you gotta chase him out the back and he drives off. You gotta run to your car where Ramon is waiting. The two tards from inside chase ya out the back. I got in my car and started to drive off, each tard grabbed the car door handles and I must have dragged them about 3 city blocks before they fell off   it was friggin wild.

warnin, spoilers in my post

heh yeah ahppened to me with 2 cops they idnt let go til i  hti my first insane stunt jump. watchign them hurtle throught eh air in slow mo a we go over a rive was INTENSE!... they landed int eh river. also lol neo the lil jacob mission where you learn to use cover i shot the guy ont he stairs once and miss  but he tripped fell down the stairs and died. Also luckily i picked up the shot gun so  when i did uncle vlad those 2 guys.... never through apunch... i just love this game so far i just beat the mission where you obtain teh sniper rifle for the first time. ive gotten a couple times ive "bumped" with a freeway, never landed anything but got pretty high in the air... id say 25 feet or so probally less though lol.

anyway, cant run out of things to say about this. first game of cops n crooks i was drivign the cops cop car and it was me and some friends it was so fun we took off max speed with sirens blaring ontot eh freeway met the enemy rammed em got a couple shots in then flew over the guard rail landing safley on teh L tracks.... the train got rid of us......

i like how theyre also not skechy with ammo. ive got 20 shots left with the sniper, a couple molotovs, about 960 pistol rounds, and traded in my 465 uzis replacing it with pickign up over 1000 rounds of MP5 ammo. I LOVE THIS GAME WHEEEEEEWWWTTT!!!!

also funny story, when i was foolign around near where ramons taxi company gets burned down i got a wanted level, which are somewhat harder to evade and crashed next to a high ledge. climbed onto teh car, onto teh ledge, and onto a roof. LE PARKOUR FTW!!!!!

Hi m3rrix, long time no see.

As for grinding, I'm presuming that instead of the vehicles having the sphere-type collisions they'll have model outline collisions, so in order to grind you'll need to balance as if you were grinding a skateboard in real life. Of course, I am just making assumptions, I don't have the game yet.

Woot woot.
San Andreas didn't have much of a grind lock either compared to VC. Same thing thing GTA4? or even less lock than SA?
I might give this a go tonight but Console stunting is not my forte. Hopefully a PC version will be released soonish but after I get my new PC. I might be active a little more in the stunting community if the bikes in this are any good for roofs. Hopefully this is better than SA for the stunting community.

almost no similarity. check my pictures in the Collection thread in the Vid/Pictures section and you will see that it is completly different from the street layout.

Grinding works fine for me btw, you can grind between the front wheel and the body, I even got a backflip to grind cause the snapping bug locks you at 90° if you spin to fast  - made me grind the rail perfectly

I want to type a big long pouring out of my thoughts regarding every little thing about this game but I dont have the time.

+The combat system...fixed finally.
+The physics...a good balance I think, you get a bit of realism but it is still comical
+The mobile phone: fits so well and the sleep function means you can stunt without having to worry about losing things on relationships

Want to confirm something: the autosave does work, after you finish something like a mission or even going out on a date or a night out with a friend. Whenever it autosaved, you can access that at the bottom of the list of the save files i believe. I remember getting busted for running into a cop (on foot - how annoying), and before I knew it I was done in. So I just re-loaded from the last mission I had.

(WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD, Sorry Haywire)

Currently, I'm stuck on that mission from Elizabetha or whatever her name is, something about cocaine snowstorm? Can't mind but the cops usually do me in. Is it just me or is finding armour kinda tricky now?

Also doing things for McReary, Playbox X and Dwayne. Only one more part of Liberty City left to unlock. I'm playing normally more than anything else.

ive seen the gameplay review..

and i think its awesome, i would never know how much i will like it once i get to try it

but looking at the videos comin out each day,
the graphics is outstanding, although the geometric appearance of peds arent really perfect, the environment was breath taking
new features eagers me to play it, like the multiplayer online, new game physics, and to try out stunting too

i just want to know, if there are animals in gta4, are there?
and also about the internet thingy, was it really a feature that lets you surf while in-game?
Title: GTA IV Opinions
Post by: kaneda on May 01, 2008, 07:08:37 AM
No animals that I've seen, but I'm guessing fishies will make an appearance.

On the stunting front, I'm of the opinion that stunting won't be quite as dynamic as it is in VC. Bikes seem to be quite clunky and you have very little control of them once airborne. I haven't tinkered too much in this department, but so far it strikes me as being SA type stunts. Also, the cities tend to be very cluttered and curbs are actually curbs this time out, rather than subtle deviations in height. Also a lot of stuff seems to be quite 'grabby' - cars in particular. It's very easy to get hung up on what you're attempting to use as stunt terrain. At the other end of the spectrum, bikes are very bouncy and spinny without any intentional direction from the player.

I suppose it's all getting used to the new game and it's own little nuances. For now I'll concentrate much more on playing than getting stunts no one will ever see.

In answer to an earlier question about replays, there are none. The 'replay' feature in GTA IV is actually a feature that lets you replay a mission should you fail it. A nifty feature, I must say.

Aye, I've failed a lot lol, you get a text asking if you wanna try again and you go straight back to where you'd get a cutscene for the start of a mission.

Interesting thing is that they're called 'replays'...they're in the stats as 'Replays used', or something. One wonders whether if there's a PC release, will it even HAVE replays.

I can't understand why they wouldn't incorporate replays (being the replays WE all know) into GTAIV, considering both platforms have HDD capabilities. I sometimes think that R*s attention to the replay element of the PC GTAs is becoming less and less important. Outside of players here, and the odd player who might make some goof-fest vid of some kind...who else would really employ the replay feature?

Also considering the fact that Halo 3 did it, and did such a good job at it, showing that it was something worth having even on consoles.

EDIT: I must admit, because of that (above), I really was hoping R* would do the same with this - imagine it, you could actually get some (relatively) decent quality videos, as only one person has to record, and doesn't have to do so while performing the stunt - and was kinda disappointed, although not too surprised, that they didn't.

From what I know about game code (Which is very little.) replay functions go hand and hand with online play. So if Rockstar does not employ a replay system on the PC version we should be able to create one.

Of course there is going to be a pc version. The pc market is much larger than that of Ps3 or 360 so if they denied pc users a version they would be morons  Sadly I'll never be able to play it with this comp and my mum reckons she's going to take it off me if i could play it anyway (RAWR! *Sad face*) so short of her not caring and a 360 suddenly appearing in my lounge I won't be able to play it for quite some time... So far it looks like this game is going to be thoroughly awesome and I can't wait to play it.

There's a bunch of extra shit I gotta buy now  already ordered an extended cable to play Xbox live, also need a 'plug in and play' thingy for my wireless controller. Then of course there's Xbox live itself to pay for, although I got like first month free or something. Anyways I'm steadily progressing through the game ok, nearly time for one of the best missions in the game so I hear which involves:

Robbing a bank and then going through portions of Liberty City shooting lots of cops, including a subway battle!

Do not forget, when on an in-game computer type 'www.whattheydonotwantyoutoknow.com' and you can find hidden maps which feature things like hidden weapon locations, armour locations etc.

Anyone else found the 'heart of Liberty City' yet? Very cool

Title: GTA IV Opinions
Post by: Madmax on May 03, 2008, 10:22:10 AM
I bought it

Impressions. Faggio stoppies are not what I want them to be obviously but I haven`t really gotten hold of many faggios and I havent seen any pizzaboys driving around. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I`ve encountered a few PCJ600s which resulted in 360s, backflips and frontflips. They look nice but the feeling is not very rewarding. The bike is hard to control and its almost s if these things were based more on luck than on skill. Then again VC felt the same at first. Again, I have not encountered enough bikes to make a good judgement.

The cars are fun to flip around. Done a few doubleflips with rotations and whatnot and those looked great. I wish there was a button to put on our seatbelts tho. I hate to see my far do a few flips in the air while I am pretending to be superman. It would have been more rewarding had I been in the car while it flipped. I haven`t tried too many car stunts yet but I will be trying packer bumps as they were someone of a thing I loved to do in VC.

As for the game itself. It is orgasmic. I could not believe it when I played. it looks nice but its the gameplay and all the little details that make it what it is. All the little things that happen, the realism. Hitting someone on the sidewalk with a car is rewarding in the sense that you hear the bones crush, the body roll and the person scream in agony. The crashes look much more realistic and the physics of the impacts are just perfect. This may sound very disturbing that someone can like such violence but its so detailed and well made that you enjoy it because its different everytime and it seems to have a particular impact every single time which is surprising everytime and just makes you smile.

The AI is something else. The cops are actually a little challenging in this game. They are harder to get away from and seem to have much better driving tactics. Just look at `the getaway`video and compare it to this. If someone starts hitting me, he gets arrested. The cops actually bring him into their car and drive him off. Its really nice.

Thats all for now i guess, there is so so much more to say but i dono where to really go. I could go forever. Buy it. I will keeps playing and try more stunting. Its too early too tell right now.

you really gotta use the handbrake to maneuver well on a bike. as for the cops, I find them WAY easier to get away from, you just have to drive away from the little circle and wait 5 seconds.

I was kinda disappointed by the police. 6 stars doesn't bring as much heat as previous games, atleast not of what i've seen. No tanks or army trucks anywhere. =\

Also I think the damage on vehicles is more extensive on PS3, I have yet to be able to really dent a roof of a car, though I haven't tried much.

I love this game, Though the thing that really pisses me off when you do a big jump and it happens to be a unique stunt spot, The camera doesn't follow you and your doing a backflip then suddenly the controls go inverted and then start doing a front flip then it just goes out the window because you don't know which button to press and then it goes totally out of view and you die
Oh, and Kingjad, what console did you end up getting? If you got a 360 whats your gamertag, and Anyone else who has 360 and this game add me too if you haven't already : xCuPPeRx

I have 360, not got a gamertag yet, will soon. The damage on 360 is just as extensive, I've actually turned cars into bizarre shapes through a combination of huge crashes, and explosions. Some vehicles get so buggered up they won't even work anymore, but won't blow up either.

Was driving a truck and was getting shot at like mad. Every bullet that hit left a hole in the back, very precise and detailed

Just finished the storyline and it was amazing.

Feron is right, once the xbox live protocol is known we could also fake replays in GTA:

- Play on your fake server
- Fake server records packet
- Stop your fake server
- Load the saved packets and restart server which is sending them now
- Rejoin game
- You see your old player going around through the city

And yes, the detail is amazing! But I think the bike handling is stupid. Also helicopters should break more easily

(his stuff is osmetimes cheaper) fill up on everything but ak-47 ammo. (its replaced with a carbine which you can buy ammo for after the misson. also make sure you got full body armor and health and just stay behind cover and let the boys do the hard part.

Hey guys! I picked up GTA4 when it came out and I have a few thoughts, probably nothing different from what has already been said.

Likes:
- The city is amazing. The detail is fantastic, up to the wrinkles on the dress of the secretary in one of the missions.
- The AI is pretty good all things considered. They react to what i'm doing and in different ways. If i'm breaking into a car, some people run away, others stare and occasionally (usually when I am almost out of health) will attack me.
- The physics. I nearly pissed myself the first time I shot Niko through the windshield.

Dislikes:
A lot of minor issues here
- The handling of the cars is a real pain in the ass. Its like the streets are covered in ice so you need to slow down to almost a dead stop to corner otherwise you spin out.
- Has anyone else really had a hell of a time with the combat in the game? I actually think this is a downgrade from previous GTAs.
- I just discovered the "sleep mode" feature on the phone. Before I would constantly get calls from people I don't want to see so to avoid pissing anyone off I have to drive across the city to take them out so they don't get pissed with me.

Overall it is a stunning game but the missions are kinda repeatitive and mirror those from older games. I haven't done much stunting and I probably won't until I complete the game a few times.

Yeah lollers tires pop after too much rubber burning. The details are awsome. Another thing that annoys me is that car doors are solid, i was so used to them not being and now when i exit a vehicle i either have to go around them or jump them. Should have seen me on my first day playing, would spend like 10 secs trying to run through the fucking door each time i got out.
Title: GTA IV Opinions
Post by: JayFoxRox on May 04, 2008, 11:31:29 PM
Lol, same for me juan, I usually leave the vehicle and start running forwards instantly - right into the door.
But it can be fun to steal cars and go backwards when the driver is still stuck behind the door and tries to get away
However, with the time I actually learned to wait for the player to close the door.

Erm...use jump button, just leap over car door

Also, jump up and down stairs to save time.

Things I learned last night:

1) Kiki is paranoid

2) You can't jump on top of a moving train on foot without killing yerself

3) I scuk at 'Three Leaf Clover', failed again!

4) I could never kill that miserable bastard Dwayne.

At Star Junction (Times Square), there are weird unmarked missions to do involving some guy who wants to be a rapper. If you go near him the camera automatically kinda centres on him, just walk up to him and a cutscene will start. Can't mind his name, but he is found at that bright-light Star Junction section in various places.

Just started in the game, and wow this is so awesome. The graphics, the atmosphere, the gameplay it's all so perfect! Funny though, my happiest moment in this game didn't involve any violence.

The sun was shining and I was just cruising around on my faggio, when jacob called me, (he just needed a ride). When I picked him up he complemented me on my bike (in his fantastic accent). Then we just cruised along the city chitchatting the whole time, with some relaxed reggaeton music (i think) on the radio.

I've tried some tiny stunts (on my faggio ), and stunting is pretty cool in IV. This is the game i've been waiting for!

Edit: Didn't know about the sleep function either, i'll start using it now

Btw does anyone know where to find a pcj600 or a nrg900? I've seen one but i was busy doing a mission so i couldnt get it.

kingjad i got 3 leaf clover firsttry. unless you kill em your buddies shouldnt die stay back ALWAYS STAY BEHIND COVER AND BLIND FIRE. use the carbine (its the only weapon i used the whole mission) and just stay back and on your buddies asses. tbh the hardest partis getting out of the bank. but take it slow and make sure youve eliminated all enemies. there is no time limit.

Post by: Kingjad on May 05, 2008, 05:46:43 PM
Whatever, passed it on third try overall. Here's my run-down on what happened:

1st try: Everything going great, got in subway, shot cops, ran like fuck, train clipped me but didn't kill me! Service hatch, going through it, and suddenly - I got no idea where to go. The map already looks like it's street level, cop blips appear on radar but I am kinda stuck where I am, clueless as to where to head to. MEANWHILE, all those blips suddenly descend onto me, so when I finally do realise where I need to go there's 6 cops at the door who all shoot at once, killing me rather quickly.

Second time - nades in the tunnel - Packie gets blown to pieces. Whoops-a-daisy.

Third time - everything goes smooth as fuck, on to street level quickly no probs this time (no welcoming party of gun-toting cops waiting for me this time), and now I've unlocked all of Liberty City.

Tried that first mission of Derrick or whatever, but during the getaway I had the slowest fucking car in the world, failed it cos of that! (called Smackdown, I think)

Best physics moment so far. I was doing the race in Star Junction and I was miles ahead in my Comet but it was smoking so I figured I would jump out and quickly grab a Stallion driving by (favorite car for me to cruise in). Unfortunately I was not that far ahead of second place and as I was crossing the road he hit me, sent me flying through the air and then I got killed cos my head smacked into the part of a streetlight hanging across the road....painful and sudden death but quite funny

Also have people noticed that different people seem to result in different levels of drunkenness? I noticed that Packie is the worst followed closely by Roman with some people like Brucie being very weak in terms of the effects whilst driving

Also Alderney is the best stunting island for me. Landed a massive roof last night

Post by: Daneeka on May 10, 2008, 12:29:13 AM
So i bought this yesterday.  Car driving is fun because you should show more responsibility about your driving because its more realistic than the previous ones.

However, in-air physics is ridiculous. I mean the snapping thing, and once i get a straight air with a car @ airport and i can turn the car in the air with steering. I was like wtf? I also hate that curbs fuck up my runups.

The best thing is that phone can remember the cheats you entered so its easy to spawn some car, nrg and stuff.
Also phone spawn looks fuckin Matrix   I will exploit this somehow if i will release a vid.

Daneeka: GTA had always mid-air control since GTA2 I think (maybe even since GTA1). I know that atleast every 3D GTA and GTA: Advance had mid-air control.

But the snapping is really annoying - sometimes it also rotates your CAR by 180° when going full speed on a bumpy road, its looks like you are using a trained, but suddenly the car gets back into the previous rotation. If they don't fix this people won't be interested in playing the game anymore once they finished the missions, because alot of people used GTA games for stunting and simple driving around before.. - this destroys it

Yeah my post was confusing, in mid-air control i mean turning like on the road. As far as i know this kind of turning (horizontally) doesn't really appear in previous GTAs.

Finally finished the storyline today. I thought I fucked up the:

jump to the helicopter, as I hit a barrel or something moments before, but despite barely going that fast it still worked out. It was pretty easy killing everyone, just that chase scene did my head in. I chose revenge on Dimitri btw, so Kate died. Never got to bone her so no big loss IMO

I think it's great as a shooting/adventure? game..though stunting will be difficult. Also most of the unique jumps suck xD

I played for the first time last night and was pretty impressed.  The multiplayer is a blast but it's weak that there's no split screen multiplayer.  So strange that they added semi-multiplayer.  By that I mean that only one person on the console can be playing at a time.  I'm disappointed that they didn't create some kind of co-op story mode as well.

The game seems to be Vice City with a next generation engine.  There aren't many new notable features (the cover system is about the only one) but the game still kicks ass.  I am a little bit disappointed that there were no new ground breaking gameplay features but the game is just too cool to get tripped up on that.

I, for the life of me, cannot finish the last mission. I'm always a 1/1000's of a second too late to jump on LJ's helicopter! Godamn!

It's a verry shitty PC port, i'm really pissed that i can play most games on high, and i can barely play IV on medium settings..
